One of the top kickers in the country will workout for the Dallas Cowboys next week.

With the recent signing of veteran kicker Mike Vanderjagt, the Dallas Cowboys will likely have to use a roster spot on another kicker for kickoffs. Vanderjagt wants to try kicking off but he hasn't done it regularly since 2003 and wasn't good at it when he did do it.

"I don't know that he's going to all of a sudden become a kickoff guy again," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a recent interview. "I think I do know the odds of that."

Jones said also that, if a kickoff specialist is necessary, he would like to find a young kicker that can be groomed.

Enter Memphis kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

Gostkowski, one of the top kickers in the country last year, will have a private workout with Dallas next week, TheRanchReport.com has learned.

Gostkowski finished his senior season by connecting on 19-of-22 field goals and all 32 PATs, with a long of 53-yards and was 9-of-9 from 40-plus yards. Gostkowski also holds Memphis and Conference USA records in PATs (156), field goals (67) and scoring (357 points).

The former Memphis standout, who was also selected to play in the Senior Bowl earlier this year, is one of two kickers to have private workouts with the Cowboys. Dallas special teams coach Bruce DeHaven attended a private session with Virginia's Conner Hughes.

Gostkowski is widely viewed as one of the top three kickers available in the 2006 NFL Draft. He is expected

Using a late LATE draft pick or picking up one of these guys in free agency seems likely. Baltimore used 2 spots on kickers for a few seasons, one guy for kickoffs and Stover for FG's.

This is exactly what I was afraid off....wasting a valuable roster spot on another kicker to just kick off.

Why didn't we just sign the better option (Vinateri) who could kick field goals and kick off. This makes no sense, especially when the other option would have cost a little more and is a proven clutch player that's won 2 world titles with his leg.

Easy Vandrjagt and a late round UDFA kicker STILL costs less than Vinatieri, not only that but we would be grooming the future replacment for Vanderjagt.

I mean the 45th guy on the roster is some developmental Special teams guy anyway, having an extra young kicker is the same thing a developmental special teams guy

i totally agree.... after the top 22 players (offense and defense) there are 23 spots left... Vanderjagt and a top young kicker, using 2 of those 23, wont hurt us 1 bit....

I agree that we should've signed Vinatieri, but this could be a good thing if this guy has a strong leg and can take over for Vanerjagt in a couple of years. 9-9 from 40+ is impressive.

BP said he didn't want to give McBriar too much to think about when he was a rookie. Maybe he is ready now to take on additional responsibilities. He certainly has the leg strength for kickoff duty.

I guess we will see if he gets a shot at it in camp.

No, cuz this is the Dallas-freaking Cowboys we're talking about here. EVERYBODY wants to play for us. And if they don't, it's cuz we didn't want them anyway...

I have watched him for several years and I cringed almost every time we went for a fg. His kickoffs are great but at time inconsistent.

Too bad our punter can't handle the kickoff duty, I hate to use 3 spots on the roster for kickers/punters.
