.......
I'm going to follow a common tactic of recent Tom Ciskowski drafts -- I'm targeting a couple of key positions, in this case guards and safeties.
Round 1 -- Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal
What's a DE who can rush the passer worth? Look at the Jets Shaun Ellis, who was probably defensive player-of-the-game 1B alongside candidate 1A Darelle Revis in the Jets upset of New England.
......
In his heyday with the Jets, Ellis tallied 11.5 and 10.5 sacks. When OLB John Abraham played next to him, the Jets had a top rush off their right edge. The Cowboys have one plus interior rusher in Jay Ratliff and the king of OLBs in Demarcus Ware. Put a DE between them who can get to the quarterback, and blitzing becomes an unpredictable luxury for Rob Ryan, not the necessity it was in those first painful eight games under Wade Phillips this year.
Jordan offers the best last chance to get a 5-technique with established pass rush skills. Nick Fairley will be long gone and Jordan is better than Marcell Dareus in this regard. If Dallas' new D-line coach can help Josh Brent use his hands better and do more than bull rush, and get Stephen Bowen back to his '09 form, the Cowboys could become a modern day Buffalo - a team which can produce a rush off its three-man line.
Round 2 - Benny Ijalana, OL, Villanova
Ijalana suffered a sports hernia which required surgery and will keep him out of the Senior Bowl. This should make him available around pick 40. He's a raw, small-school guy, but he's big, athletic and can probably play any of the guard and tackle spots. He won't be ready to start on opening day 2011, but when he's ready, he could play wherever the Cowboys needed him.
Round 3 -- Jaquan Jarrett, S, Temple
He won't be the fastest safety in the underwear Olympics, which should put him in the early 3rd. He's a solid FS prospect with a solid overall game. Ryan runs a lot of zone and depends on his safeties to be smart and sure tacklers. He had the emerging star T.J. Ward in Cleveland this year. His brother Rex has gone deep in the playoffs the last two years with heady, mighty-mites like Jim Leonhard and Eric Smith. Neither is flashy or has eye-popping athletic skills, but neither gets beaten very often either.
......
Round 5 -- Brian Lainhart, S, Kent State
See Jarrett in round 3. Lainhart ranks among the NCAA leaders in career interceptions. He played through a series of nagging injuries this year, and that affected his performance, but demonstrated his toughness. If he's healthy, he's another of the the smart, ball-hawking safeties the Cowboys need.
The Ryan family 3-4s use a lot of nickel sets against spreads which use three safeties. In Baltimore, Rex ran a scheme that had four linemen, one linebacker, two corners and four safeties.
How many safeties do the Cowboys have on their roster whom they can trust? If you said one, you're probably stretching the truth.
Round 6 -- Anthony Sherman, FS, Connecticut
This is a strong year for fullback, the strongest in many years. Sherman is the best in-line blocker of the bunch, and is a special teams demon. He would be a value in the 6th, and could add some muscle to the Cowboys interior running game.
Round 7 -- ..... the Cowboys do have a 7th round pick, courtesy of the Patrick Crayton trade. Since I've forfeited the pick, you folks get to make it. Name your 7th rounder in the thread.
