The Cowboys didn't blink. They waited, unlike their early draft peers, until the end of their allotted time, waiting for a trade down to materialize. None appeared, at least not any good enough to knock Dallas away from staying in the 9th slot and picking Tyron Smith.

They liked him too much. Rumors leaked in recent days that the Cowboys liked Boston College OT Anthony Castonzo, but that was clearly a head fake. Dallas did not want to risk losing Smith to Minnesota or Detroit.

Smith's selection raised questions of how Dallas will use him and what they will do with current left tackle Doug Free. The NFL Network's Mike Mayock said that Dallas should sign Free to a one year deal, then decide in 2012 whether to move Smith to left tackle and let Free leave...

....that makes NO sense. Free is a damn good tackle: Left OR Right which is pretty rare. Why would we let him walk?

The article was going for locking them both up for the next five years, for what is now being paid for both he and Colombo now. That is an upgrade at the same cost.

He has been listening too much to his NFL network peers in Jamie Dukes and Marshall Faulk saying that Free struggled when he did not!

I'm still trying to figure out what Dallas team Faulk watched last year with that comment. Free took on elite pass rushers all year long and never wilted, not once. I'm not sure how many sacks were attributed to him but it wasn't many. Marshall Faulk is a Hater in full armor.
