Crayton did the right thing kicking the ball

The announcers acted like Crayton did not know the rule against kicking the ball on the muffed punt. I think he did know the rule and it was a smart play. Instead of trying to fall on a wet ball and have it squirt out kick it out of bounds. Take the penalty but avoid the turnover.

I don't know if Crayton knew the rule of not but I'm glad he was on the spot and got the ball out of bounds. I'll gladly take the penalty over giving the ball up

Agreed. Was more like a heady veteran move to me. Take the penalty yardage and keep the ball.

I agree as well. It's better to take that 5 or 10 yard penalty (whatever it is) then to let Tampa possibly get a recovery there.

I am not sure if batting the ball is a penalty. If it is, then there is no difference from kicking the ball. If it is not against the rules he could have just as easily batted the ball out of bounds. I agree that if he tried to recover the ball he may have failed and turned it over. He made a good decision. I don't think batting the ball is illegal, so had he batted the ball that would have been the best option.

I agree the rule doesn't make sense. It's needs to be changed. What if a player inadvertenaly kicked the ball Out of bounds. This rule is just stupid.

Yeah..and hopefully, the coaching staff will be equally head's up and just go with ONE punt returner. Geezlouise...Let the punt returner get into the flow of the game. Ya can't just stick a guy out there once every two or three weeks.

As an aside, Newman got BLASTED on the play.

It ain't worth putting him back there.

If he was on the ground and swatted it, its not a penalty.

This is Football

I would hope anyone who grew up playing the game would automatically know that you can't kick a football.

Granted, if the choice is between kicking a ball and turning it over you kick the ball. However, there was no Tampa player about to dive on the ball. He could have very quickly reached or dived down and tapped the ball out of bounds.

I didn't mind the play either. We were already pinned deep, so a few more penalty yards didn't make much of a difference.

I nice hook slide pushing the ball out would have worked nicely similar to Leons infamous Thanksgiving Day SNAFU.

No, that was a bung hole move. He should have just slide into it pushing it out of bounds.

That was dumb, no if ands or buts about it.
