Just for the sake of discussion

Why doesn't JJ call a meeting. Invite Tony, Dez, DM. Ro, Carr, Beasley, Free, Carter, And any other guys we have currently in FA status. Get them all in a room with a couple of very smart cap guys. No lawyers, no agents, no wives or possys, and lay out these questions.

1) Do you like being Cowboys?
2) Do you like each other?
3) Do you want to win with these guys?
4) what are you willing to do to make these things happen?

Explain what's available and have a reasonable amount we can afford for each guy, and still bring in a little more help.
Leave the meeting with a contract or being released. At least that way, you know who's with you and who's not!!!

Just for the sake of discussion, ain't happening. They all have agents.

In the salary cap era there is no loyalty. It's an entertainment business.

How would we release a free agent? Nah this smacks too much of when Tex Schramm would low ball players in the pre FA era.

I don't think that would favor the cowboys. All they would have to do Is restructure romo and smith and they have like 40 million plus available and they can sign anyone they want.

Problem is do the cowboys want to do that ?

In an ideal world the player would use an agent for a consultant, but do the deal themselves ....

That way they could save the 4 to 10 % of the contract value common to sports agents.

I'm sure for nearly every player on the team, the answer to the first 3 questions is "Yes". But that doesn't change the fact that this is their job. It's dangerous and violent, with a very short period of earning money compared to other careers. The NFL already has a very player-unfriendly contract system compared to other major sports. Players are right to look out for themselves first, no matter how much they love being a Cowboy (or a member of whatever team).

you want crazy? How about they all have to schedule the day @ the palace. then, they all come in to the room and Stevie lays out the plan "You are all going to help" is the motto...he asks the questions posted by the OP, and then says, "One at a time, you will be excused from the room for 30 minutes while the rest of the group discusses what you should get paid"....the answers could be very interesting to see what other players think with the idea that they may have to pay for all of them and still stay under the cap (of course)

Because some guys would be like I deserve X amount of Romo money or some other player. If they had a plan that say for example Top 5 LB's make X amount and we can afford to pay ______. Then said guy says but so and so makes X, I deserve that kind of money to.

Feelings get hurt real quick when it comes to money. Lawyers and agents are a necessary evil..

For starters, players typically don't get involved in each others contract situations, so Tony would not show up. Also, most of these guys are entering free agency for the first time and know this will be their biggest pay day, why would they do this without their agent?

The main reason is it is against the CBA to do this. There are very strict parameters in the CBA prohibiting meetings between owners/coaches and players.

Well, actually the main reason it won't happen is it is a horrible idea. In a game of players with huge egos, you don't see this as a disaster waiting to happen? The players would be *****ing at each other about who deserves what and would ultimately divide the team.
