Its that time of year when we see a lot of crazy talk about trades that will never happen, draft picks that require a first round talent to drop in to the 3rd round, or the presumption that some scrub on another team will be a franchise QB for Dallas. I get it. The off season is boring and we get little or no information from the team website that is chocked full of poor analysis and nonsense. Sorry, but its becoming more useless all the time.
So here is my list of things that Cowboys can do to get to the Super Bowl. I will preface this by saying it hasn't changed much because the Chiefs won the Super Bow, with the exception of one item.
1. Resolve the QB decision. To quote Aaron Eckhart from the movie "Battle: Los Angeles", "you can go left, you can go right, I don't care. Just make a decision." Not resolving this contract thing is going to effect Dak and the team in 2020.
2. The defense needs more anger, less swagger. I hate theatrics by the players after they make a play. There are 60 plays to make every game and one or two a game is nothing to celebrate. Get angry, get after the ball. Draft and sign players that visibly foam at the mouth during a game. This is a slight exaggeration, but I want football players, not product promoters. Competitive players are looking to be on the field every down, not looking to the sideline to see if its okay if they take a blow. I want defensive players looking to hit somebody, not calculating the best angle to avoid direct contact.
3. Power in the middle of the defensive line. If they do not get guys who can push the pocket in the middle of the line and hold their ground on running plays to protect the LBs, then we have no reason to expect 2020 will be any different than 2019. We had the #1 offense in 2019 and finished 8-8. When the offense fell flat, the defense was not there to give them a hand with a stop, or a take-away. Winning the LOS consistently is what held this defense back. Rush the QB into bad decisions and turnovers will come.
4. Get a real Fullback. The Cowboys have always tried to replicate the triplets. Cooper, Zeke and Dak are the closest they have come to the triplets yet. But when they had the triplets, they also had Moose Johnston. I have no idea what Dallas sees in Jamize Olawale. What does he do? I hear they like him because he is versatile, he can play RB or FB. From what I see he sucks at both. Give Zeke a real blocking FB and watch the running game improve dramatically. It also opens some possibilities in the passing game.
5. Speed. The Chiefs team speed is impressive. It changes a game in a flash. Adding some guys who can really fly will improve the offense and special teams. Tavon Austin is not fast anymore. He had a big TD against the Rams because his defender got knocked to the ground by his teammate. Otherwise, Austin is not running away from anyone or scaring any defenses. If a guy with 4.2 speed is available, take him. Take 2 if they are available. The NFL is power on the lines and speed everywhere else.
6. A safety with range and football IQ. Can't let guys get deep downfield on the corners with safeties that take too long to recognize the play and get to the ball. The safeties also need to come up and make plays in the running game. Get a safety who is a sure tackler, with range, smarts and ball skills and the defense will improve tremendously.
Notice I left the QB position out of this? That's because its not the problem. I think signing an old man to replace Dak is not going to produce a Super Bowl or even the playoffs. Its wishful thinking and will set the team back 5 years. Its Drew Bledsoe all over again.
Its going to take more than the draft or one draft too, although I think they can solve a couple of issues in the draft and a few in free agency.
Sorry for the length, but if the Cowboys were only 1 issue away from the Super Bowl they would have been 12-4 not 8-8.
