Purely speaking of takeaways here..

2014 - 31
2015 - 11

Church. Claiborne. Carr. Scandrick

None of them are big INT guys at the nfl level..granted, we generated 18 INTs w these 4 in our secondary in 2014 but where are the takeaways going to come from

Jones didn't really look like a ball hawk last year..now, he will be a full time safety it appears so maybe that helps...maybe not

Many people are discussing overall defensive play...Imo, this defense has to get back to taking the ball away for this team to succeed like we want...

But exactly where are these turnovers going to come from? I think it's safe to say that the 4 players above won't amount to much in the INT department..we have enough evidence to say that confidently

When you are not scoring a lot of points - like the Cowboys last season - teams are not going to take chances like they did in 2014. I know there are other reasons, but this is a significant reason for only 11 take-a-ways in 2015.

You hit on it. When the opposing team is behind and knows they are not going to have many possessions (see Zeke) they will have to take more chances. That's what will lead to mistakes and turnovers

Ints are only part of the equation and are in many ways a part of putting up offense to force teams to throw the ball and take risks. The real key for this team is forced fumbles. In 14 we forced fumbles, last year we didn't. Ints are great but that's half if not less than half of most teams turnovers

INTs are far more common than fumbles

In 2015, the Ravens had a league low of .8 fumbles per game and buffalo had a league high of 1.8 fumbles per game. Kansas City had a league low of .4 ints per game and Dallas had a league high of 1.4 ints per game.

But overall I agree that getting take aways is very important for team success. In 2014, I believe durant and carter also chipped in several ints.

Pass rush is the biggest key to causing turnovers, especially when the secondary guys are average. You can get by with the guys we have, but you have to create pressure on the opposing QB. We haven't done that.

After the Bucs won the super bowl, we opened the next season hosting them with QCarter starting at qb. We lost that game, I think the score was 19-10, but Tampa took no chances at all because they didn't feel like the Cowboys offense could put up enough points.

You would think so yet in 2014 we had a lot more ints than in 2015 yet we had more sacks in 2015 than in 2014.

Interceptions and fumbles are both great as both are take-a-ways. I do like the interception a little more as they seem to have a better chance of being returned for a TD. Most fumbles players are diving for the ball on the field of play (not the end zone I mean).

DB's will NEVER create an INT if they continue to be coached to face guard the received and NEVER look for the football in the air - Need to make a play on the ball to be able to create an INT. I don't agree with this type of stupid coaching......

The Cowboys were second to last in passing attempts against the defense last year. That is why we didn't get turnovers. Teams simply weren't throwing the ball that much,

Improved pass rush will help.

I don't necessarily mean more sacks (Though that absolutely would be great) but just more constant pressure on the opposing QB more regularly.

Pretty much this.

If we score more points, the opponent will make riskier moves.

Also, although it isn't stated here ever, because of the fantasy stats/only-one-stat-matters generation, forcing a punt is just as good as a fumble/interception turnover.

All I want is a defense that doesn't let the other team score points and gives the ball back to Tony & Co. Whether that's by fumble, interception, punt, or turnover on 4th down I don't really care.

Many secondary coaches - including Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban - teach not looking back for the ball because it slows you down, especially if/when you're in a trailing mode.

A corner must have an instinct to know when to look back for the ball, but it's not really something you can coach - thus instincts and reaction time. You coach proper technique and not getting beat deep by your man.

Yes. Go back to the Randy White - Harvey Martin - Too Tall Jones era.
INT's came our way.

Our CB's get beat too often. I started as a Cowboy fan watching Mel Renfro and Cornell Green. Enjoyed Everson Walls rookie season of 11 INT's. Landry and Jimmy Johnson always have had an excellent secondary. DAL secondary has been garbage for a decade. It's time to change.

Yes, we could use improvement. But the game is so much different than it was when Walls was playing. You could practically mug receivers down the field. You can't do that now. Heck, you can barely touch them without a pass interference penalty.

Be that as it may, when the pass rush improves, I expect the secondary play to improve also.
