Creative on Defense formation

The debate is always 3-4 or 4-3. Of course, those all really mean 3-4-4 and 4-3-4 with 4 DBs.

Obviously Roy is having problems in coverage. But he is a good player that you want on the field.

Seems to me like we need to get creative.

I don't think Roy can be a typical LB in the 3-4 because of his size and inability to take on guards.

So what about making him a hybrid position?

So has anyone ever heard of some formation like 3-3-1-4?

I guess that is close to a 3-3-5 which is almost like a nickel package (4-2-5).

But I'm curious about a situation where you have our 3 DL playing like they do in the 3-4. We have our 2 OLBs playing like they do in the 3-4. And we have one MLB lined up over the middle and cheated maybe to the strong side. Then a couple yards behind him, we have Roy. Then we have the typical 4 person DB-field.

My thought is this, by position this way a bit behind the MLB, you are basically saying that the MLB will always take on the lead G and Roy would be behind him playing like a SS. He would just have less coverage liabilities.

I'm no defensive expert, so I'm sure there are issues with this. But I see a difference of putting him behind a MLB than playing him as an ILB. In the typical 3-4, the 2 ILB are in front of the guards, so they get blocked by the guards. By having a MLB, the guards have to pick which will be going after the MLB. And by having Roy in some rover spot behind the MLB, I am thinking the other guard may not be able to get to him fast enough.

Please give me your wise counsel on such a prospect.

After reading it, I guess another way of putting it would be that the 3-4 is altered so that the 2 ILBs are stacked, with Roy being the deeper of the two by a few yards. My thought is that the stacking would cause some problems for linemen and would obviate the problem of having Roy lining up man-to-man on a guard.
