That's the buzz word for tonight and the rest of this week. Heck, maybe the rest of the year. That depends on whether or not these Dallas Cowboys can continue to play well in all phases of the game for four quarters each game without self destructing. With that back down to earth comment let's look at this game and credibility.
Doubt. I don't know if the team was doubting itself but I'd lay long odds on it. They just hadn't played well. A poor first half against TB before waking up. Dominating at times against NY but finding a way to lose the game by self destructing. Add in letting NY waltz down the field with little apparent effort to score a last second winning field goal. In the inaugural game at the new opulent stadium in front of a record crowd of over 100,000 brave souls. Losing to your arch rival. Well one of them anyway. Leaving a winless Carolina club in the game up to the last possession of the game before salting it away in a lackluster effort. Losing to Denver on what looked like a schoolyard play with Dallas running around trying to make a tackle. Another lackluster offensive outing and another fold by the defense when it counted the most. And having to go to overtime to beat a team which had won two games since forever.
Yeah. There was doubt. Worse. Romo besieged. He with one of the best starts to a career in modern NFL history with one of the best quarterback ratings ever. Calls to fire Wade and forget Jason Garrett. He couldn't call the right play especially on the goal line if the game depended on it which it did. A fallen star.
Even the face of the franchise, our beloved owner stated this game coming off all the above and after a bye would go a long way in establishing credibility for the Dallas Cowboys. And rightly so IMO. I do have a hard time with that however. Twenty straight winning seasons. Eighteen playoff appearances over that time frame. Playing in the NFL or NFC Championship game 10 or 13 years. Hey, I'm spoiled and apparently are a lot of America with me. This is America's Team and its that team because of excellence and legends. Hey, I didn't make it up but I recognize it. So it's not cool if America's Team isn't making noise on the field as well as off it. And the right kind of noise by the way. We're supposed to have credibility by divine right.
Well, guess what. Dallas has credibility and is now tied for the lead in the division with the now 4-2 NY Giants. True they're a 1/2 game behind due to the head to head loss but we have a level playing field. BTW, I called the upset today by the Cardinals. I have to toot my horn just a little.
And just or maybe more importantly they played a solid game in all three phases of the game for four quarters. No defensive fold. A solid or better defensive outing. Sacks against a previously nearly unsackable QB. And pressure galore. A solid, no better offensive outing. Romo really put up some spectacular numbers. Austin has another career day in his SECOND start and joined some elite players in racking up over 400 yards in two straight games. They made some mistakes but it got better as the game went on and it was improved from previous games. We had a ST score and won field position.
We looked like a playoff team. Heck, we even got some turnovers which has been a real sore spot.
Piles of smiles all around. And more importantly some credibility around the league with that all important infusion of confidence. Not to mention knowing what's it like to play better than solid football all around against a pretty good team.
Yeah, it's a feel good story. Maybe it'll stop the doom and gloom for the next week.
