Cricket phone service. Anyone use it?

I use Cricket. Same network ad AT&T, as it's owned by them. Coverage is great, as I travel all over the US for work. Their Internet is capped at 8 Mbps, I think, but I think it's plenty fast.

Yes. Reason I asked is because I used to get CDMA phones for my daughter and flash them for cricket.

Now, they are CDMA and will force customers to get new (gsm) phones. CDMA no more.

I'm using an unlocked LG G2 from ATT. You can use any tmobile or ATT phone, as long as they are unlocked. They have a lot of free after rebate deals in the store.

My understanding is the AT&T phone has to be unlocked. They won't/don't unlock them, correct?

I think they will unlock them as long as the owner is in good standing with ATT. They should provide an unlock code within a couple of days. If that fails, depending on the phone manufacturer, you can get an unlock code from ebay sellers. Just look for good feedback.

I spoke to a gentlemen at a cricket store. I think he said it needed to be unlocked. So I will need to look into one of your suggestions.

They have some decently cheap phones in the cricket store.
