Critical needs

I have been reading everything posted here and feel obligated to bore everyone with my own opinions on our needs. I list them in order of importance. Many will disagree (I know that is unusual with this crew!) but I will try to explain my self. Here goes:

1. OLB

This is the most critical in my opinion. Losing Singleton showed we have to shore this position up in a hurry. Ware has the right side secured, but there is no one that can match him on the left. We did real good building the basis for a dominating defense with Ware, Spears, Canty, etc., but need to replace Singleton who I think is done. He was good enough before the injury, but I don't good enough is good enough. Now he may not rate that if he comes back.

2. ILB

Dat is gone. We need someone to step up and take his place, not only as a run stopper, but as a leader. Is that person on the team right now? I don't think so. We need to fill this spot to make sure that we maintain progress on defense and not slide back.

3. Center

Johnson has not shown the strength to play this position well. Move him to guard or move him on. Gurode won't fill the need. Too many mental mistakes. This could be the one spot to fill in FA!

4. Left guard

Yes, I think we need to find a replacement for Larry Allen right now, even more than we need a right tackle. LA is sliding fast and I would be surprised if he is back next year, much less makes it through the season. Maybe Gurode can play here, but we need someone solid on Bledsoe's back side.

5. Quarterback

Don't flame me here, I think Bledsoe is the man! But, in the long term, we need to have someone to step up in 2-3 years, and I am not sure that person is on the team right now. I am not convinced either Romo or Henson is the answer, although I lean more toward Henson. If we don't draft a QB this year, we will for certain need to draft one next year.

6. Kicker

Need I say more?

All in all, I feel pretty good about the likes of Pettiti, Rivera, Davis, Jones and Barber. I believe the components for a Superbowl run are in place with the exception of the positions identified. I am thinking of 2007 or 2008 as the year we do it.

This is why I feel we should draft Bobby Carpenter. His college position was OLB but I believe he has the size and attitude to move inside and be a run stuffer as well. He works in either spot and I think we can just about kill two birds with this pick.

If Burnett can step up and take the inside spot then keep Carpenter outside. If not move Carpenter inside and let Fujita, Burnett, and Thornton battle it out for the outside spot.

Something like this...

Carpenter...Burnett...James...Ware

or

Fujita...Carpenter...James...Ware

Granted it would be nice to bookend Ware with Lawson as well but we can't pick 'em both and Carpenter gives us more versatility.

I have a giddy going just thinking about this scenario!

Ya know, chiming in late on this, but I still think Al Johnson dserves more time. They were just showing a clip on the NFL network about Seattle MLB Lofa Tatupu and showed Al Johnson pancaking him when they played us. This past season was really his second in terms of playing since he missed the whole 1st season with the injury, right? So my point is, I think he still can improve and become a quality center and deserves another year at least. I don't think it's time to give up on him yet. It's older guys like Rivera who it's time to move on from, because they have no upside left and didn't show much as it is.
