Crushed about Passing of Loved One

She passed away due to some illness I believe sealed her fate which the vet failed to diagnose her with but i myself would have no idea what it could of caused her to all of a suddenly get sick and followed with a slow death in a week, she was taken to the vet and treated with a shot to fight off the vomiting she was experiencing. He then prescribed some liquid medicine to be fed in her mouth. If anyone has any idea what could of caused it i would be interested and also her poopy was like black. She was loved and Tinky loved back all the time. May her soul rest in piece. She was 9 months old Chihuahua and a very beautiful loving dog. God Bless

P.S. Now i know why Vick will pay for what he did to dogs but i already knew he was wrong because i would never treat a dog in that manner. They deserve the same respect like another human being. I just have my hearts out to all the dogs abused and neglected by owners.

The only way to start the healing process is to go get yourself another dog, pronto...

It's what I've done both times I had my dog die on me... the first, Thunder, was 16, Bear was just 6 (he had a run-in with a real live bear)...

Both times, I was at the pound the next day...

Sorry to hear about your pup. I have to make a hard decision soon about my pit/boxer mix. He's 11 and is having trouble getting around.

She didn't get in too any chocolate did she?

I can't express my condolences enough.
I too am a dog LOVER.

I'm no vet but it certainly sounds like she could have eaten something toxic.
Chocolate is a possibility but they have to eat quite a bit to do harm and it seems the vet would've checked that first. Onions are also toxic to dogs but I don't think they're "killers".
It could be a plant or small animal that was ingested that caused a severe allergic reaction.

Whatever it was, once again, I'm terribly sorry for your loss.
I agree with the above poster. Mourn for a little while if neccessary, but ultimately, go get yourself another dog. You'll find comfort in remembering her through your new friend.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your little Tinky. :( I've lost several pets over the years and it's never easy.

Regarding the cause of her quick passing, a quick search found this about black poop:

One of the most severe causes of black feces can be a hemorrhage in the first section of the digestive tube when the blood gets mixed with the fecal matter.

The origin can also be in stomach ulceration with hemorrhaging or in injuries caused by foreign objects that have damaged the walls of the intestines or stomach, which means that somewhere inside there is a hemorrhage. It is very important to determine the cause, and by no means should you refrain from going to the vet. The presence of blood in the feces can also mean that there is tumor in the digestive tract or to infectious diseases.

If that was the case, an internal hemorrhage would cause her to get very sick very fast.

If the vet knew about the poop, I'm surprised that there wasn't more investigation done. Before you get a new dog, get a new vet. Ask friends or coworkers where they take their animals, or if they know anyone that could provide the name of a vet they enjoy using.

Sorry to hear that man. It is really difficult when a dog dies. Some people dont understand that, but it is for those of us who love dogs.

About 4 years ago my wife and I had a moment of weakness, we both knew better, we went to a pet store in arlington to buy a dog cage to train the puppy we were planning on buying.

While we were there my wife started playing with this little golden retreiver, that is what we were in the process of finding a GR from a breeder. Well we broke down and spent 700 bucks on the puppy.

One day after having the puppy she started coughing, we got very worried immediately. We called the vet and brought her into the vet the store recommended, big mistake. He checked her out and said she is in great shape, must just be a little stress from moving into the house. So we thought that was very vague and odd. We went home and she seemed to be ok.

During the middle of the night, the dog was in her crate next to my side of the bed. I heard her making these horrible noises, I got up and turned on the light and she could barely breathe, It was taking everything she had to get one breath.

We took her to an all night 24/7 vet. The vet their was great and honest. Within 15 minutes she told us the dog was very sick, parvo virus and had to be put down. It pretty much crushed my wife and I. We were so excited to have bought our first house and then the new puppy. We both really love dogs.

We couldnt put her down, we had to call the store. They told us she was fine and that we violated the return policy by going to a vet not on their list......you can imagine how angry I was. So I called their vet and he told me to bring her in during the afternoon, not first thing at 8 am sometime in the afternoon. The dog could barely breathe. It was the most painful and sad thing I have ever watched. The dog just stared at me scared to death.

We brought the dog in and the vet and the guy from the store, said oh she is just a little dehydrated, did you feed her? I was ready to rip the guys face off. So then they tell us we will take her overnight and let her sleep in this little tent that recycles a medicine through the air that will help her breathe. She will be fine in a day or two we will call you.

We were stunned. We both said what are you talking about, the vet told us she had parvo virus and within days would have all kinds of side problems and it was about 10, 000 dollars to attempt to treat her and the odds of it working were like 10%.

They insisted she is fine. We will call you. Next day comes and no one calls so I call the place and ask how she is and the guy on the phone was like what? Who? oh oh yea yea the retreiver, she is fine eating and doing great. We couldnt believe it. Next day comes I call because they never contacted me and the same thing, what who oh yea yea she is fine. SO I said can we come see her today and they said no no, we dont let customers back there. HUH?

it gets to be 6 days and enough was enough. I call and the guy who was the assitant manager...friggen loser. starts giving me crap for calling and questioning them, so I had enough and insisted to speak to the owner and wanted to know what was going on. He got all ticked off called me every name in the book and then hung up on me. Then I call back and one of the 16 year old part time girls answers saying the manager wasnt there. So I did some digging and found a way to contact the owner, who I was told was out of town. I called this jackazz and asked him where the dog was and he told me the dog had died.

You can imagine how I felt. I was more angry than anything. After a day of arguing with this guy I went into the store and demanded my money back for the dog and all the accessories we bought there. They refused. I had to fight with this guy almost literally to give me my money back. To this day they only gave me back the money for the dog. I just sold the crate in a garage sale this year. When I went into the store to get my money I told the owner on the phone I wanted him to personally give me the money and explain why the dog died.

WHen I showed up and told the 16 year old part time girl at the register she said oh I am ready to give you your money back, I stopped her and said go get the owner, I forget his name. She said he is busy, I laughed and said oh really, where is he in the back, I will go get him myself...so I started walking in the back and she called him to the front....amazingly he wasnt busy he was hiding. Scumbag. My wife had to hold me back. The owner told the girl to call the cops. I was going to rip this guys head off. Thankfully after screaming at him for a half hour an inch from his face with other customers in the store I realized it was enough, and it was over. I informed him that I was going to write a letter to the better business bureau explaining what happened, the names of the employees and how they acted, give them dates and receipts. The guy got furious with me and threatened to call the police again. I told him to go F himself and left.

Worst situation ever. And there was no recourse for me the pet owner and customer, I was lucky to get my money back. I spent a week researching pet stores and was sickened from where they get dogs and what they do. Now at the time I was 27 years old and should have known better, but I never bought anything but dog food from a pet store in my life.

It was our fault for contributing to the cruelty of animals by buying a dog from a pet store. Never do that. So you might want to look into parvo virus because puppy's are prone to that. Sorry for rambling.

My wife and I ended up doing the right thing and adopting a dog from a kennel. We found a 1 year old Dalmation. We made a 75 dollar donation to the agency and took home the dalmation. She is the best dog I have ever been around. Its as if from the first minute she was with us she was grateful.

Sorry for rambling I just thought I would share. The pet store was in north arlington in lincoln square near the ballpark. Never give them business. They are the scum of the earth.

here is the GR that didnt make it.

I feel real sorry for you on your loss.

I've lost dogs and cats in my life and it's awful.

I had a beagle puppy when I was 10 and of course he would always dig under the fence...well the last time he got killed on the highway behind my house...I was devastated.

Every once in a while still to this day 31 years later...I still dream about him.

His name was Buddy and I still want to cry thinking about him.

Your story about the Golden Retriever hurts my heart, but I wanted to respond to this paragraph... I've had three dogs in my adult life, all three of them came from the pound... all three of them were, or are, nothing but great dogs...

If you want a dog in your life, put away the snobbery, go down to your local animal shelter and save some dog's life... you may be right about them being grateful for being "rescued" from the pound...

You can have your AKC papers, mutts RULE!!! :)

I agree. We had no intentions of going home with a dog that night. We had been searching humane society's for Golden Retrievers and weimeraners..
we had no luck and contacted a local breeder for a Golden Retreiver and they were very rude and basically didnt want to give us a puppy, to this day I do not know why.

Getting our dalmation was the best thing that could have possibly every happened. For the rest of my life I will only look for dogs from the humane society and other organizations.

I know what you mean about the mutts. We have two, a boxer pit mix and a terrier mix, and they have both been wonderful dogs.

After we got married my wife wanted to go look at puppies at a breeder. I didn't think we'd ever get out of there. I almost had to pry a pug pup out of her arms. They wanted $700 for that thing.

We settled, by that I mean she chose, the terrier mix and only paid $100 for her. The boxer mix was free.

Theebs, please report that pet store to the ASPCA in your area. They're required to have healthy animals with papers from a vet verifying their health and shots, etc.

They will close down pet stores that aren't in compliance. I know it's been awhile ago, but if the place is still in business, please report them so the other animals there aren't in the same condition and suffering.

What a heartbreak. Stories like that make me so sad and so very angry.

We did when it happened, I wrote a letter to the better business bureau and we notified the vet at the 24/7 vet office who wanted to be updated on what happened.

My uncle told me to make a giant sign on wood and stand in the parking lot with it saying something to the effect of "this store sells sick dogs" or store sells puppy mill dogs......

I didnt feel like getting arrested so I skipped that!

it could be cancer, my dog died of it, she got sick, couldn't eat, and got sickly skinny, then died, it was a slow process, but it went on for like a month or so

sorry bro

edit: fauerluna's research is probably more correct

to the original poster, i am so sorry for your loss. I know it is very painful to lose a pet because they become apart of the family.

Theebs, that is an unreal story. I was just in a local pet shop the other day and was sickened by what i saw with their animals. The dogs were all unhealhty and cramped together in these tiny cages with no room to move...they were literally ontop of each other and covered in their own feces...it was disgusting.

I went to the store manager and voiced my displeasure at the treatment of their animals and he could have cared less.

I will never buy any sort of animal from a pet store, they are always the worst of the worst.

Anyway, i am in the market for a dog again. I have always loved dogs and grew up with an Irish Setter who lived until he was 17 years old...we let him go a few years longer than we should have and i will always regret how miserable he was in his final months. I had 2 other dogs after that, brothers, who both made it to 14 and then one died of stomach cancer...

the surviving dog basically died with his brother. He had lost his soul, you could see it. He knew his brother had died and was not coming back. He was not the same after that, he refused to eat much and moped around all the time. I had never seen an animal actually feel pain emotionally like that in my life and it was heartbreaking to see...a few months later he just could not get up anymore or refused to try, so we took him in to be put down...what a sad day, i miss those dogs soo much.

Really sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a pet and it never gets any easier. My story doesn't involve the passing of my dog, but my girlfriend is leaving me after having lived together for a couple of years. She's taking the dog. Even though I know he'll be happy and healthy, it still makes me sad knowing he won't be in my life nearly as much anymore if at all.

So, I'm following the advice given in this thread and when I get settled into a new place, I'm going to get another dog. I'll more than likely just go to a pound, but part of me wants a pure-bred beagle. :) I dunno. We'll see.

Anyone that sees a bad pet store like that, I strongly urge you to report them to the local ASPCA. They will go there and check the place out and force the owners to take the appropriate measures to ensure the animals are healthy and living in humane conditions or the ASPCA will shut them down.

Even if the owners do make the needed corrections, the ASPCA will continue to have follow up visits to the property to ensure that the conditions haven't lapsed.
