I have mostly ignored the Cowboys since the draft. And this year, for the first time since the 90's, I did zero predraft research on any of the prospects. I did watch parts of the draft to keep up with who the Cowboys picked, and am aware of the players who left. Dak's contract status bores me, as does the contract status for both Parsons and Lamb. I haven't engaged in any offseason speculations, and today (day 5) was the first time I even looked up any information about training camp. I watched a 5 minute video on Youtube, and got bored again.
I guess that after 50 years of watching the Cowboys (my first game was Thanksgiving, 1974), all the underperfomance of the past 3 decades finally has gotten to me. I curious, but I don't really care any more. And it's not just the Cowboys. All the politics being dropped into sports is a turn off also. Following the daily ups and downs of the Cowboys and other sports is just not exciting anymore. I don't want to be preached at, or be exposed to the ideologies that permeate sports leagues and sports journalism.
Bottom line is if you disrespect me, why should I bother to care about you. That's how I feel about most modern "entertainment" these days. And sports is just one more type of entertainment. They (the big nebulous THEY) don't respect consumers of entertainment, don't respond to our concerns, and simply treat us as idiot cash machines to spend on their drivel. The Cowboys have become part of that drivel. Every year, promises made and unkept - by owners AND players.
I'm sure I'll remain curious about the Cowboys. 50 years of being a fan will do that to you. But the truth is I really just don't care anymore. Why should I?
