Current Cap Space

The Cowboys can cut Dak next year after June 1st, freeing up $45M, and in 2018 $55M, they can easily bring in another QB and sign Pickens for several years.
Dak is slated to count $74m against the cap in 2027 now that we restructured him this year and shoved his money forward

To cut him, the dead cap impact would be $131m. We could split that over 2027 and 2028.

Dak isn’t going anywhere. The Cowboys would never make a move like Denver did with Russel Wilson.

He’ll sign another extension and be here until 2031.

As per usual!!!!

I was wondering if that included the restructures.

So those claiming we would need $15 million or so for our rookies were wrong?
Yep....they always forget that for each guy that we sign a contract comes off the books. The only guys that really count much to the cap are the first two rounds or so.

Lawrence hit is going to take close to $4m in cap space so the net effect of all the rookies is going to be about 8.5-9m.

There is $35m in contracts available for restructure. Extension for Pickens could save $21m. For Bass about 3.7m. Cuts to non-essentials could add even more....think Schoonmaker, Anger, and Hooker.

The cap was never an issue despite what many posters here kept trying to sell. I had many arguments with them here. And next year it will be the same thing guaranteed.

It’s almost $14m counting the unsigned Lawrence.

Yes, but for every one of them signed about a million dollars comes off the cap because they are replacing another contract. In reality the only ones that really move the needle are Downs and Lawrence. Which is why the next hit to the cap will be about 9m...not $15m.

I’m sure you know by now that Pickens isn’t getting a long term deal this year. The rest is peanuts, especially since I doubt you’d want to extend Schoon and Hooker.

PS - I’m not sure about this time of year, but the bottom of the roster doesn’t usually count against the cap.

My mistake, not cut, trade after 1 June,

What?

That’s like saying we can add back $3m to the cap and also have Dee Winters for “free” because he’s replacing Kenneth Murray, who cost $5.5m last year

Someone is always replacing someone else.

The cap charge for the rookies will be $13.7m barring a slight tweak to Lawrence’s expected number. If anything they are replacing last years rookie group that cost $12.5m

It could come down if some get cut, which could happen.

Correct me if I’m wrong. We can be 100 million over the cap right now if we chose. Just have to be under it by the 1st Day of the new NFL year in March .
You're both right and wrong. You're right about March. But we can't be over the cap because March passed 2 months ago.

Would you be willing to extend Ferg and Bland to get it? I don’t think there is anything left to do to get more besides them two. Q was an option but I think that ship has sailed.
There isn't much left to tap into. Besides the two you said, there is a little from Clark, and close to 20M from Q. Williams.

Unfortunately, Q isn’t getting an extension. Would have been nice.

Unfortunately, dead cap is almost always chock full of bonuses, which stay with the team making the trade.

He has a no trade, but if he waived it, we would end up with a similar huge dead cap hit. If we traded him right now it would be around $150m, the biggest dead cap hit in history.

Also, that future team would still have to pay his massive base pay each year, which will be around $160m over the next two years

His contract is insane and there’s a reason why no QB has passed him despite several big name getting new deals since he signed

The most glaring example of how dreadful and historically bad our front office is when it comes to cap management.

Todd Williams and Adam Prasifka comitted an NFL war crime with that deal.

We actually are over the cap and that’s almost by design.

The league forces teams to get under the cap by March 1 and then allows them to balloon up again in free agency and the draft before forcing them to get back under before the end of training camp.

No matter what side of the aisle you are on Dak, there is no way anyone can disagree that that albatross of a contract was unnecessary and should have never done it.

The 35m that is available by restructuring isn't peanuts. Would pretty much cover just about any addition we could make.

The cap charge will be about 9m to the cap by adding the rookies. No one cares or even was talking about the cap hit being 15million. When all the cap discussion was going on, the naysayers were saying that the rookies were taking $15m and we had no space. Those who actually understand how the cap works knew that it was only going to be an $8-9m increase to the cap.

And you can fit a pretty decent first year of contract in that $6-7m difference. Downs $5.3m hit knocked Joe Blows $1m hit off the cap. The net increase to the cap was 4.3m, not 5.3.

Not sure why you aren't seeing how it affected the cap. The cap amount did not increase by $14 or 15m due to the rookies. It increased about $8m. All the team is worried about is the net increase. And it is all the panicking people that are clueless about the cap should worry about.

did you bother to do any research before posting this?

What $35 mil. Are you including Pickens? There is no chance in heck that he gets a contract this year. If not, please expain where we can free up that much.
