If you're going to make a statement like that you should probably have some kind of evidence to back that up. Seems pretty ridiculous to me.

Tell me how many snaps Steve Octavien logged at linebacker last year when the team was hurting for depth on the outside.

That's right, none.

That enough evidence for you?

Victor Butler struggled with switching to 3-4 OLB last year but he got on the field and played at his position while also helping on special teams.

Octavien did not.

Why should I view him as anything other than a special teams player?

He hasn't done anything else and is unlikely to get the opportunity to do so.

He was a rookie last year, there could be alot of reasons he didn't see time as a backup. Butler was the first one they threw in there and he seemed to do pretty well getting pressure so i doubt they felt the need to throw Octavien in there. Or it could just be that he wasn't ready to play LB for them. Either way it was his first year. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt, its his second TC. He wouldn't even be here if they thought he had no future as a defensive player. You can find someone else who's good at special teams who has better potential if that was the case.

Im just saying don't claim to know what the coaches are thinking or that they don't view him as a defensive player. Its his second year, they obviously think he has some potential to become a player or they wouldn't waste their time with him. The same can be said for any player on an NFL roster right now and its ridiculous to think otherwise. Its his second year lol. Wow.

Hell Cletis has been in the league for 5 years and hasn't done a single thing and people are all over him like white on rice right now, like he's gonna be the savior of our defense cuz he's such a "ballhawk". lol Yet Octavien, at the beginning of only his second year now, has no chance in our defense to ever be anything right? Please..

I saw Timmy Mac's comment on CJ, and it just proved how dumb the media is most of the time.

He didn't even realize that his name was coming up a lot bc that's not who he focuses on. Then, he gets defensive and says he's a long shot to make the roster. Why? Esp when Dallas thought enough of him last year to steal him and then keep him on roster despite being injured? He may not be the fav, but i think he's anything but a long shot

You can put Steve Octavien on your All-Training camp team if you want to.

I'm going to consider him solely a special teams player until proven otherwise.

If Octavien can be more that's great, but he looks to be on the outside looking in for a roster spot this year.

Octavien wasn't a rookie last year. He was with two other teams before we got him in 2008.

I don't think he's a long shot either, i think they find someway to keep him and Octavien personally. Both are young guys with potential and have something to contribute on gameday.

Ah.. you are correct sir. My mistake. 2 years experience. My main point still stands that, as with any young guy in the NFL, he wouldn't be on the roster unless the coaches saw some potential in him to be a player. And not only was he one of our better ST players last season, he appears to be making progress this season as well. I doubt we'd let him go now.

Here is Butler's day today ,

3:30 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Romo throws checkdown behind Felix Jones. Octavien was right there and might have picked off accurate pass.

3:35 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Victor Butler blows by Scott Sicko for an easy sack.

3:36 BryanBroaddus: Victor Butler around the corner on Sicko, can't secure the edge, would have been a sack. [via Twitter]

3:50 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kitna throws it away. Scandrick came clean on blitz.

3:52 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): How do you forget to block DeMarcus Ware? He could have killed McGee.

4:04 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Bad series for starting O. Jamar Wall comes clean on corner blitz.

4:07 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kitna would have been sacked by Bradie James, but he hit Holley on a deep slant.

4:07 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Butler blows up a toss to Choice. Barron failed to block him.

4:09 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kitna scrambles and hits M. Johnson on the sideline. Probable sack for Butler.

4:10 calvinwatkins: No Anthony Spencer. He might be done for the day. Victor Butler getting his reps on 1-team. [via Twitter]

Looks he is playing with 1st team , I guess that should say something.

Butler definitely had a good day today! I noticed that. But he seemed to only really beat Sicko (no big deal), and not Free and Bennett like CJ did.

Also, I think they play different positions. CJ is more of the WOLB, pass rusher type. 1st team right now doesn't say much

Doesn't Butler line up primarily on the strong-side though?

Ethed already stated that CJ backs up WOLB and Butler SSOLB. The common denominator would not be Free, it would be Bennett (TE) and Baron (swing tackle).

Sicko is not equal to Bennett, at least in blocking ability. While both went up against Barron, only CJ got a sack, as far as we know.

IMO, if Spencer were injured for any length of time, Wade probably moves Brandon Williams to the strongside.

The odd thing was that last year Brandon Williams was on the strong side with Butler on the weak. Then when Williams got hurt they started teaching Butler the strong so that he knew both sides.

i think neither is going to play with Brandon Williams back in the mix.

I think we are going to see all three. some plays we might see ware, williams and spencer with ratlieff and bowen. that would provide a fierce pass rushing front.
