Cowboys awarded four compensatory picks in April's draft

By: K.D. Drummond | March 11, 2016 2:47 pm ET

The NFL awarded compensatory picks to a selection of franchises today, based on a complex formula centered around 2015 free agency. The Cowboys, as predicted, were awarded four picks; one at the end of the fourth round and three at the end of the sixth round. This brings the Cowboys grand total of selections to 9 for the 2016 draft.

Dallas was one of three teams (Patriots, 49ers) to come away with four additional picks. Compensatory picks must be used on selections for the team they were awarded to. Starting in the 2017 draft, teams will be able trade the picks just as they do merit-based picks.

Not sure why they didn't put all of our non-compensatory picks in the table but we have 9 picks.

As you can see we traded away our own 5-7 for this year. So we have two 4s and four 6s and no seven.

I'm not regretting it but I didn't know we swapped picks with Raiders for Butler. I think he's good enough to warrant that 5 but at the time he was down on the depth chart for them....i'm shocked we had to swap a 5th for their 6th.

Don't know. I'd be suprised if any made the roster.

I wouldn't dismiss it so fast. The past few years they have found James Hanna, Holloman and Dwayne Harris all in the 6th round. Holloman's career was cut short but they liked him as a player. Last year they had a few guys make this team from the 6th or 7th round in Nzeocha and Swaim. They take those later rounds somewhat serious.

That'd be awesome if it happened. If they can get a real good draft they might be a team to be for the 17-18 season.

This is for starters. More than a few are getting snaps as rotational players and then as backups to injured players, STs, and SPs. So we get almost a starter per draft from the last days picks. But that's just starters and not snaps.

I'd like to see snaps for 4-7 and UDFAs but it is significant.

Yeah I mean not saying they WILL hit on those guys but there's a chance for some depth guys at least with those picks. It will help if the Cowboys stick to drafting players non not projects.

Forgive my ignorance but why isn't there a pick for Murray? McFadden was lesser in value.

Bruce Carter blew it for us getting a 5th.

If he would have hit his playing time incentives he would've made over 5m and moved us up from the 6th.

In hindsight a possible 3rd round pick would have been better. Thank you for clearing it up.

He could still get us one this year, but it would have only been a 4th for Murray
Hardy would have to sign for almost 10m to get us a 3rd in 2017.
I think we were stalling to see if he got signed or not. It would dictate how we approach FA this year.
If Hardy, Dunbar, Bern, Cassell and others get signed we could get some more picks.
It is why we re-sign guys like McClain, Hanna, Mo, Wilber and Brown. They don't count.

We could also sign Chris Long and Bruce Carter since they were waived, they don't count either.
