demarcus ware's 58.5 career sacks are just 1/2 sack behind tony tolbert in the dallas record books. so, with his next sack, ware will move into 3rd place all-time among cowboys sack artists -- behind greg ellis, who totaled 77, and jim jeffcoat, whose 94.5 sacks are tops in dallas history.

ware is currently averaging more than 13 sacks per season (more than 0.8 sacks per game) so, barring injury, he should pass ellis next year and jeffcoat the next.

(* i think he's still getting better, and that he'll continue to get sacks, but i also recognize that the development of anthony spencer and/or the young linebackers will be key to helping him wreak havoc over the next few years...)

also interesting is that ware's 20 forced fumbles are ALREADY tied for the franchise lead, according to pro-football-reference.com.

The "unofficial" sack records are as follows:

Harvey Martin - 114.0
Randy White - 111.0
Too Tall Jones - 106.0
George Andrie - 97.0
Jethro Pugh - 95.5
Bob Lilly - 94.5
Jim Jeffcoat - 94.5 (has 102.5 for his career but some were with the Bills)
Greg Ellis - 77.0

The QB Sack did not become an "official" NFL statistic until 1982 but the Cowboys kept sack records since the early 60s.

How Martin, Jones, & Andrie are not in the HoF is beyond me. :bang2:

Andrie was one of the best DEs in the league in the 60s & early 70s and went to 5 consecutive Pro-Bowls from 1965-69. He also totaled 57 sacks in 4 years from 1964-67. By comparison, Ware had 53.5 sacks in 4 years.

So the Cowboys' record Ware is shooting for is held by Harvey Martin with 114, he's got a ways to go yet.

(If anyone has any different numbers let me know so I can update my records).

Wow, I've never heard of Pugh or Andrie. I need to brush up on my Cowboy's history I guess.

some studs in that group--and Tony Tolbert is quickly forgotten --he was a great pass rusher

and if they can go back and calculate passer ratting for old time QBs, why can't they go back and count sacks (at least back to the time they have films of all the games)

The truly impressive stat here IMO is White's (which doesn't have anything to do with your HoF argument.)

So you are the one who makes the rules that define who is a fan and who is not ? Good to know.
I remeber a time in germany we had those people too who thought that their thinking is the right one and that others aren't as good as they are.

Anyways...

great comment!

I can't believe those three still aren't in the Hall. That's just pathetic.

And what Randy White was doing from the DT position is just awe inspiring. That just shows you how great he really was.

You tend to forget how dominate our pass rush was when we had Jones at one end and Martin at the other.

Jones would have had more, had he not thought he was a boxer for awhile.

Tony Tolbert was one of my favorite players in the 90s. He had knee problems which limited him to some degree. Although he didn't miss many games he retired fairly young, yet he still was a very good pass rusher as well as being solid against the run. He was a good character guy and a team player as well. He ended up with 59.0 sacks for his career with a single season high of 12.0 in 1996, his only Pro-Bowl year.

For Randy to get 106 sacks from the DT position is amazing! Alan Page is the only DT I can think of that had a lot of sacks (148.5 unofficially).

I believe that the Cowboys weren't keeping sack stats in Bob Lilly's early years and missed several of his in their count. I could be wrong about that but my understanding is that the team didn't start tracking sacks until 1963 or so (Lilly was a rookie in 1961).

That would also increase George Andrie's total some as well if they added in his rookie season (1962).

Maybe Adam has more info on that. The team may have gone back and looked at film already but I never heard that they did that.

And Lilly was double teamed on almost every snap especially in the early 60's, just prior to Doomsday.

How are you suppose to know it if you didn't live it? IMO, you should know the history that occured after you were born.
