When Jim and Jane Garrett's football family gets together at the Jersey Shore every summer, their 27 grandchildren are drawn to one uncle who organizes the flag football games and the fun.

"Jason is the pied piper of the family," Jim Garrett, longtime coach and scout, told the Post yesterday.

His son Jason is finally getting the chance to be the pied piper of the Cowboys. Jerry Jones named him interim head coach Monday. Garrett will have his first test Sunday against the Giants as the former Princeton quarterback comes home to Jersey.

Garrett once had one of the brightest of coaching futures in the NFL. Now he has an eight-game tryout for Jones, the closest owner in the NFL to the late George Steinbrenner. Jim Garrett, 80, knows what his son is up against.

"The players have to take over, they have to go out and do the job," said Jim, who was a running back with the Giants in 1956 when two of the assistant coaches were future Hall of Famers Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry.

"This is like the Titanic. There's a hole in the bottom of the ship," he added. "Everybody has to bale or the ship is going to sink."

Jason Garrett said he expects to turn around the Cowboys one practice at a time.

"I grew up in football. My dad was a football coach. It's something I love," said Garrett, the Cowboys assistant head coach the past two-and-a-half seasons. "What we need to do is focus on being great today. After we have a great Wednesday, have a great Thursday. Focus on the process."

That's how you succeed on Sunday.

I like the things I am reading about JG. Maybe he really was a victim of the Wade Phillips take-it-easy attitude.

That was a good read. theebs will like hearing that Garrett is a Springsteen fan.

I liked the comment about the harmonica. For some reason, I just thought that was really cool.
