Dak’s injury explained

This is the same "Dr" who said Isreal Ayasada growing a right booby wasn't steroids related because it was not unilateral gynecomastia. I'd say he is a bit shaky.

Thanks for posting though.

Yes he and Dr. Chao has had some gaffs trying to diagnose injury from afore. In this case he’s explanation with visual effects helped me to understand the injury and severity better.

It's less about the fractures and more about the blood flow and nerve damage. Blood flow almost cost Alex Smith his lower leg. Let's hope Dak's isn't as bad.

The biggest problem Smith had was that he developed necrotizing fasciitis post-operatively. That's what took his injury from a 6-9 month recovery to nearly two years.

I'll tell you what,I watched the skins game today,it was amazing to see smith out there, and he did fairly well after 2ys...so happy they lost but I was pulling for smith.

He has his critics but Jaylon Smith will be a big help to Dak here from a mental/encouragement side given he overcame an awful injury.
....so Jaylon Smith good for something now.....I'd suggest SLee.....more experienced with sitting games out.

That's a good video. So it seems likely the injury started before the defender actually rolled onto Dak's foot.

I thought Smith was dealing with leg infections, not blood flow issues

Correct, he wuld have played last season if not for the post-op complications.

I'm an infectious disease specialist, and the VAST majority of post-op necrotizing skin and oft tissue ifnections as bad as his (there are pics online) result in the loss of at least part of the effected limb.

So as long as Dak doesn’t get an infection. That bodes well for him being healthy by next year?

Assuming he has no post-op complications, and has no significant compromise of the nerves or blood supply, he will likely be able to do all normal daily activities without assistance within 6 months. He may even be working out within 3-6 months.

The question will be how extensive the ligament damage was and how much prior function he regains with respect to his status as an elite athlete. The best thing going for him, as a right handed QB, is that this is his back foot and not the foot he uses to drive the football.

Gotcha. Makes sense. Not so much an issue with the bones healing. It’s about how much soft tissue and ligament damage did or did not occur. And the blood flow.

thank you.

If you saw the ESPN episode of 30 for 30 on Alex Smith, there was genuine concern that he would lose his leg.
