Dak has had Michael Gallup open a number of times this year only to overthrow him badly. Why is that? Why did the long pass to Cooper work while the passes to Gallup failed?

I played QB back in the day. The key to the long ball is to put enough air under the ball to let the receiver adjust to it arc and catch it in stride. Look at the pass to Coop. It was not a good pass. The good or great pass would have laid the ball over his shoulder on the go route. He would have caught it in stride and scored.

The pass Dak threw was inside. It was not a good go route pass but it accomplished the mission which is to allow the receiver to adjust and catch it. Dak is so pre-occupied with not getting intercepted that he throws the long pass too deep. Hence, the reason Gallup is missed. The pass to Coop was almost an accidental success. The pass was not intended to be short and into the field as it turned out. But Cooper is such a good receiver he adjusted and made the catch, thus making Dak look good.

I am not buying Dak as a good long passer until he consistently gives his receiver an opportunity to adjust to the pass. To do that you have to put air under the ball and take the risk that the defender adjusts to the ball as well. The pass that Dak threw to Cooper earlier in the game on a post pattern was a much better pass even though it was intercepted by an outstanding play by the safety that sniffed out the play and ran across the field from left to right, jumped at just the right time and made a great catch and interception. Outstanding safety play. If he had not been able to make that play, it would have been a perfect pass to Coop for a long TD. Dak did not see the safety come from the right and threw what would have been a perfect pass. Which leads me to another criticism of the way Dak is coached. You never, ever see him pump fake, or look a defender away. It really is not that difficult to pat the ball as if you are going to throw it one way and then look to your intended target. But that never happens with Dak.

Dak is fundamentally a running QB who is learning how to be a pocket passer. Unfortunately, the coaching staff is not providing him with the tools to succeed. Moore and Linehan are not the right matches for what Dak needs. Whiskey Wade would have been a far more desirable mentor. We need to upgrade QB coach and OC for next year to allow Dak the opportunity to become reliable and complete QB.

Just my humble opinion based on years of my own experience as a quarterback that could sling the rock deep and hit the open space that gave the receiver the room to adjust and make the play.

Accuracy = touch know how much to put on the ball is everything and it’s what separates QBs into tiers. PERIOD. Imo Dak is what he is, we get him long we get him cheap. It will allow us to bolster the defense through FA and draft considering we won’t be in the market for a QB in the 1st round for 1-2 seasons

I think you hit the nail on the head. on all his long balls he doesn't put enough air under the ball and it seems the ball gets there too fast....yes, he has to allow the WR to adjust. the one time he did it, was the game against Giants and the first pass to Austin, Austin beat his man and actually had to slow down and catch the ball on his hip/belly....but that's good because the WR adjusted.

And I was a wide receiver for 20 years of my life and I played with tons of QBs, including some really really good ones, and from a receivers perspective, YOU NEVER HESITATE in your route when the ball is in the air, you keep running. And Gallup hesitated twice. So there's that.

Thank you,
folks are screaming about passes that are rarely attempted by anyone..lol cracks me up
It boggles my mind how people talk about Dak. Even the experts are bashing him but you can take any elite QB you want and put his numbers up against Dak their first 3 seasons and Dak is right up there with the best of them and in most cases ahead of them. Those are facts you can use

Let me ask you this.....do you believe that having big hands helps in throwing the ball farther and with more accuracy.

My answer is yes but I've never played the position yet have noticed all the guys that can throw 60 yarders have large hands, even at the high school level.

Thanks in advance for your opinion.

ikr!! I'm not saying he is the goat but he doesn't get the credit when due, media and some fans only look at what he does wrong! Even when he wins.
and he is just a 3rd yr guy doing better than Vets with worse records. He has been getting criticized since last year, no one is saying anything about the princess over in GB, he's great but not doing better than Dak this year.

Had he made any hesitation in that route, it would have been incomplete. Gallup's a young receiver so I understand, but he'll get it. I'm sure they're going over it in film session this week, and he'll come out strong against the Colts.
I think this will be a big game for him, not that he's not having a good season, we need to get him into the endzone a few times this week.

They also talk about how bad Dak was last year but outperformed franchise guys like Ryan and Newton. Nobody is saying he is elite right now but he is a good QB that is a franchise guy

it's going to be awesome when he really proves the doubters wrong. I think he can and will probably be considered in that class with 2 to 3 more seasons.

They had a safety coming over the top. I don't think Dak is a great enough passer to know. But if he led Cooper on that play, it could have been intercepted. The pass was correct in a high arch allowing Cooper to run, adjust and catch in a spot the DBs could not react to the ball or him.

Also, Cooper is a more experienced WR than Gallup. Timing is very important. I think it will get better and better for Dak and his WRs.

I agree with you 100% Linehan, Moore, and Garrett are not good coaches for his growth and development. However, he is learning from his mistakes in spite of bad coaching.

Your analysis of throwing deep is correct. Troy Aikman had the same problem. Early in his career 1989-1991 he would either launch ducks or sail the ball past WRs on deep throws. Watching Beuerlien from the bench when he got hurt and continuing to grow with Norv help him develop those deep throws to Harper and Irvin.
