Dak has had Michael Gallup open a number of times this year only to overthrow him badly. Why is that? Why did the long pass to Cooper work while the passes to Gallup failed?
I played QB back in the day. The key to the long ball is to put enough air under the ball to let the receiver adjust to it arc and catch it in stride. Look at the pass to Coop. It was not a good pass. The good or great pass would have laid the ball over his shoulder on the go route. He would have caught it in stride and scored.
The pass Dak threw was inside. It was not a good go route pass but it accomplished the mission which is to allow the receiver to adjust and catch it. Dak is so pre-occupied with not getting intercepted that he throws the long pass too deep. Hence, the reason Gallup is missed. The pass to Coop was almost an accidental success. The pass was not intended to be short and into the field as it turned out. But Cooper is such a good receiver he adjusted and made the catch, thus making Dak look good.
I am not buying Dak as a good long passer until he consistently gives his receiver an opportunity to adjust to the pass. To do that you have to put air under the ball and take the risk that the defender adjusts to the ball as well. The pass that Dak threw to Cooper earlier in the game on a post pattern was a much better pass even though it was intercepted by an outstanding play by the safety that sniffed out the play and ran across the field from left to right, jumped at just the right time and made a great catch and interception. Outstanding safety play. If he had not been able to make that play, it would have been a perfect pass to Coop for a long TD. Dak did not see the safety come from the right and threw what would have been a perfect pass. Which leads me to another criticism of the way Dak is coached. You never, ever see him pump fake, or look a defender away. It really is not that difficult to pat the ball as if you are going to throw it one way and then look to your intended target. But that never happens with Dak.
Dak is fundamentally a running QB who is learning how to be a pocket passer. Unfortunately, the coaching staff is not providing him with the tools to succeed. Moore and Linehan are not the right matches for what Dak needs. Whiskey Wade would have been a far more desirable mentor. We need to upgrade QB coach and OC for next year to allow Dak the opportunity to become reliable and complete QB.
Just my humble opinion based on years of my own experience as a quarterback that could sling the rock deep and hit the open space that gave the receiver the room to adjust and make the play.
