There’s none that can dispute the force in which Dak Prescott came on to the scene as a rookie QB replacing arguably the best pure QB to ever wear the star on his helmet. He lead an offense as formidable as any of us fans have ever watched. “3rd and 3 we’re getting a first down and I don’t give a damn run or pass!”
The 2016 team achieved so much more than anyone of us could’ve ever imagined given the circumstances. “Linehan’s a genius!” “Garret for coach of the year!” “Romo’s a class act for giving the rookie control of the team.”
2016 was a year where adversity seemed to allude a franchise that had been snake bitten for years. Dak and Zeke provided a new wave of enthusiasm to carry this ill-fated team to the next level. Unfortunately that streak of fortune came to an abrupt end against Greenbay in which our rookie stars did not disappoint. Each performed at a level all of us were proud of but our defensive weaknesses were too much to be overcame.
IMO, coming into 2017 the coaching staff opened up the playbook to Dak at the line of scrimmage similar to what Romo had in prior years. It didn’t take long to recognize Dak’s inability to diagnose defensive looks and interpret his reads accordingly. The team still managed to cover for these weaknesses with strong performances in the running game. However, teams figured out how to defend Dak and he and the coaching staff could not adjust. Dak ended up with 8 games of less than 200 yards passsing. 8 games of less than 200 yards passing. Could you imagine that being a Romo lead team and the heightened criticism that would follow?
In my estimation, Dak has potential and could lead Dallas to where we all want them to go. But, I think at this point his in career, he is much closer to the production we saw from Brandon Weeden. Numbers ok but a complete inability to lead a team with his passing. He and the cowboy coaching staff have to exponentially improve every aspect of their game to replace one of the other greats to ever wear the star on the side of an NFL helmet.
