Dak Prescott v. Tony Romo: Interceptions Matter

Dak Prescott’s unexpected emergence this year has been one of the biggest stories in the NFL. This week, he landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

One of the main features of Prescott’s game is his care of the football. He has already set the rookie record of pass attempts without an interception at 155. He’s only seven passes from tying Tom Brady’s record of passes without an interception to start a career. Prescott also threw 50 passes in the preseason without being picked off. And he set a Mississippi State record of 288 passes without a pick. His only turnover as a Cowboy is a sack-fumble last week against Cincinnati that had no affect on the outcome of the game, but which likely caused Dak to beat himself up over his mistake.

Tony Romo has always been cut from a different cloth. It’s not as if he wants to turn the ball over, but he seemed to come into the NFL back in 2006 without being too concerned about it. His first pass as a starter in 2006 was picked off by the Giants, and quickly led to a touchdown. His reputation was that he was a gunslinger, in the image of his fellow-Wisconsin quarterback Brett Favre, who has thrown 59 more interceptions than any quarterback in history. Bill Parcells gave Romo this label in his book A Football Life.

what a hack article. tony's longest no INT streak is longer than dak's and he threw like twice the yards and 8 million times the TD's during it.

The _only_ reason Tony's INT rate is becoming an issue suddenly is because Dak hasn't thrown one yet. Tony's TD/INT rate is over 2:1, which is a good rate for an NFL QB. Tony takes care of the football; what's more, a chunk of the picks he does throw he throws when he's consciously taking big risks at the end of games. That's true for every QB, obviously, but given the bad defenses Tony's had here the last 6 years or so, we're in that situation a lot.

If Dak simply had a routine 2 interception game on Sunday, he would go from interception God to having a worse career TD:INT than Romo (Welcome to Sample Size 101: Introduction).

It's an attempt to explain the lack of playoffs for this team.

I don't buy that the defense has been bad for 10 years with a hall of fame pass rusher and some high ranked cb's.

Tony has never seemed to care about field position, moving the chains, throwing the ball away to come back next down. Then add in turnovers.

I look at Tony as an individual athlete that can put up stats but doesn't get everyone on the team to come together.

People always say he needs better talent around him.

Dak gets his teammates to elevate their play. He is patient enough to wait for the play to be there rather than force it and trusts teamates to make plays.

I don't feel like romo has much trust in teamates except for witten and dez in certain situations which may be why he holds the ball so long.

romo has often run the type of offense that gains yards in big chunks then shoots itself in the foot and stalls out by sloppy plays as a whole that moves them back or by checking out of called plays on 3rd down and not converting. I think he tries too often for the big play rather than take the smart play or high percentage play

What's his TD rate per INT in clutch moments ratio?

Not sure, but his passer rating in those situations is very good relative to the rest of the league, so it probably follows he's taking care of the ball in those situations, too. Have you already forgotten?

Using Romo's most recent season 2015, keep in mind he is more wrinkled, slow and washed up now... Romo would have 11 INTs through 6 games. Meaning in order for Dak to catch the old wrinkled guy, he would have to throw 12 INTs in the Green Bay game.

Does this matter? With this average defense, ABSOLUTELY.

I have to agree with some of this.
Dak gets his teammates to elevate their play........... I have been thinking this for a few games now.
He is patient enough to wait for the play to be there rather than force it.......he also will throw it into the ground.
Dak knows there is another play, another possession, and tony will try to force things, and trys too hard to make every play work.
