As you all know Dak worked out of the shotgun in college. But it seems the coaches are giving Dak a little more each and every game. I'm wondering about his ability to pass the ball from under center (not play action). What does it take for a QB to develop that ability? Is it simply giving him a few more reps from under center each game or is it a skill that requires a whole offseason to develop (footwork, reading defenses, familiarity with playbook, timing....etc).

He's smart and a good athlete. I'm sure he'll figure it out.

It does add a level of complexity to the position regarding timing, and in some cases, reading the defenses pre-snap.
3, 5, and 7 step drops all require different timing...of course.
And the deeper drop may require the QB to turn his back on the defense...so he can be tricked into thinking the coverage is one thing when it isn't that at all after/during the drop.

I just wish that they'll throw in just a little 3, 5, or 7 step drop type play in each game. Doesn't have to be much or complex but just to get him more comfortable doing it in the game. Even a 3 step drop from under center slant play to dez from time to time would be nice.

It's not easy for many qb's to do anything they've rarely done. From taking the snap to the footwork. But it's obvious that Dak has put in the work to get it figured out. Heard them saying they would fax him the play calls late at night before practice and he had them down the next day. And if he missed something witten got on him about it. He is willing and able to learn and has the discipline to put in the work
That is huge for any player but more so for a qb

Prescott
shotgun 49 of 77 565 yd 7.3 ypa 1 td 0 int 90.0
under ctr 17 of 22 202 yd 9.2 ypa 0 td 0 int 104.7
Per ESPN, it's 58 passes from shotgun, with a 76.5 passer rating. That leaves 41 passes in non-shotgun situations (i.e., under center), with a 116.6 passer rating.

I got that from PFR. Some of ESPN's splits (target distance, directional, etc) are still a week behind.

Can someone explain why playaction does not count as under center passing?

it's not that it doesn't count, it's just not the same as a traditional drop back in the sense that in play actions, LBs and safeties put themselves out of position.

the reason why most of us are clamoring for it, is because a.) it means we aren't using a huge chunk of the playbook and b.) passing from under center can be very effective in that it doesn't take as long to develop and has a lot of the field open. many times in play actions, especially bootlegs, there is 1 or 2 reads.

thanks percy.

on a similar subject but different note - reading storms breakdown it looked liked almost all the zeke runs this week came from a formation where prescott was under center. and almost all the passes this week came from prescott in shotgun ?

It's not only Dak that's use to the shotgun, Zeke is as well.
