After signing all their draft picks and with FA all but over, Dallas is at 11.5m under the cap.

They need up to 8m for Hardy and another 1m to get to the full 53m man roster.

That leaves them with roughly 2.5m in cap space.

They will get 580k back for every game Hardy is suspended.

The only other easy sources for cap space would be Carr's contract(8m if he is cut, 4m if he takes a pay cut)
Restructuring Witten's contract- 3m
Extending Dez- 4-7m
Various cuts could save around 1m for guys like Gachkar, DMC, Randle, Bern, Brinkley, CWhite

It is nice to have around 5m in space as a cushion and to cover injuries. If a trade is needed(RB) a lot more may be necessary.

I'm trying to think of a realistic back that'd require us to have 5 mil in cap space, but come up empty.
Why would even more be necessary?

IR, injury replacement, training camp trade(non RBs also). I'm expecting a Carr deal to get worked out so that should give them the 5m they like to carry.

What happened with all the money from Romo restructuring his deal? Thought it was for a possible AP trade, but maybe it was for the Hardy deal instead?

Nothing happened to it. Its the reason they are currently $11.5 million under the cap right now. It was always to free up the space needed to cover the $580,000 weekly cap hits once Hardy starts playing. It was never for AD.

At this point, I wouldn't push any more cap space down the road. We've made major improvements on the D this year. I'm satisfied with that. I'd much rather save that cap space so we can resign Hardy and our OLine when the time comes.

I think Carr takes a pay cut for sure and we get 1 or 2MM back when Hardy ends up with a suspension of 2 or 4 games. If Dez does a long term deal, all the better.

Yes, it was for the Hardy deal.

The practice squad requires over 1M.

Any players on IR will subtract directly from the cap space. That's obviously dependent on that players specific cap hit.

Carr could be restructured without a pay cut.

If they want to extend a player like Crawford that could increase his cap hit if they want to give him an immediate bonus.

There will be various small dead money cap hits. If WR Farmer is cut even if retained on the PS, that will be 55K dead. These seem small but add up some years.

Basically, it seems fairly tight as long as Dez is on the Tag and Carr is at his current cap charge.

I think the restructure of Romo showed that Dallas isn't going to create extra space this year until it's absolutely needed. We're up against it because there are no moves that the Cowboys want to make at this time.

If there was a player they wanted to bring in, I think we'd see greater urgency to get the Dez deal done or restructure Carr.
