Dallas Cowboy Top 10 draft RB potentials

Like any past relationship, it’s time to move on. I know we’re only 1 day removed from DeMarco Murray jumping ship to join the rival Philadelphia Eagles, but with the 2015 NFL Draft just over a month away, we need to work on Plan B. So far we’ve added running back Darren McFadden who I think is a good solid pickup. He’s been a little injury prone but if healthy, can produce a 1,000 yard season with our line. I still think we need to pull the trigger on a young back in this draft. I’d only reach for Melvin Gordon or Todd Gurley in the 1st round, but this year’s draft has a lot of backs to choose from in the mid rounds. There are some really nice gems out there that a few teams will be looking to nab in the 1st 3 to 4 rounds.

I watched tape and studied about 20 backs entering this year’s draft and I have to say there’s some talent out there. Maybe the Dallas Cowboys are looking for a future potential starter out of the gate before adding defensive depth or they could be looking to add a solid back to throw into the mix with a two or three back rotations with McFadden and Joseph Randle. Heck, maybe Ryan Williams finally gets a shot off the practice squad and I really hope he does, from what I saw last preseason. In either case, here’s a look at my top 10 RB’s that the Cowboys should be considering drafting.

1. Melvin Gordon – Wisconsin 6’0 215 LBS – 1st Round pick up. Possible late 1st round.
Has great inside vision who’s capable of making that 2nd or 3rd cut to get into open space. Great speed, but not afraid to lower the shoulder to get those extra yards. Grade: A

2. Todd Gurley – Georgia 6’1 226 LBS – Possible Late 1st round to early 2nd round pick up.
Better than average speed who can break and shed tackles. Plays with great power and not afraid to use his big solid frame at the goal line. Patient runner who uses his blockers or a cut or 2 to find space. Only issue is can he recover from the ACL tear in November 2014. Grade: A-/B+

3. Jay Ajayi – Boise St. 5’11 214 LBS – Late 2nd round pick. Not sure he’ll be there with our 60th.
Has quick feet and good speed. He can make 2 or 3 cuts to find space but also not afraid to take a hit or give a hit. Has nice vision inside and can follow his blockers to get into the backfield. Has a big solid build ready for the NFL. Grade: B+

4. Ameer Abdullah – Nebraska 5’9 198 LBS – Another late 2nd round pick up, but could fall in the 3rd.
Has great speed and can make a cut on a dime. Good vision to find the inside lanes. He’s a short guy, but not small by all means. Solid frame and not afraid to lower the shoulder. Needs to have better ball control/security. Grade B+/B

5. Tevin Coleman – Indiana 5’10 206 LBS – 3rd-4th round pick up. Nice steal if falls to 4th round.
Has small thin build and might need to build up some muscle but, has good speed and good inside vision. He’s capable of making the extra moves on a defender. Lacks some power but can be worked on in the weight room. Grade: B

6. David Johnson – Northern Iowa 6’1 224 LBS – Another steal if falls to 4th round.
Strong back who can play with power and speed. Good open field runner looking for the next move. Can shed a tackle or 2 for extra yards. Big solid NFL frame and ready to run through some goal line plays. Grade: B

7. Duke Johnson – Miami 5’9 207 LBS – Possible late 3rd but could go late in 4th also.
Duke can shed tackles and has decent speed. Needs to add muscle and weight for his frame to succeed in the NFL. He’s more of a 1 cut, downhill runner. Grade: B/-

8. TJ Yeldon – Alabama 6’1 226 LBS – Some feel he’ll go in the 3rd but I see him going in the 4th.
Has NFL ready frame and speed to play the game. Good lane vision on the inside. Can make the 1st or 2nd cut and get on a straight line after. Plays tall and with Power. Grade: B-

9. Jeremy Langford – Michigan State 6’0 208 LBS – great 4th or 5th round pick up. Steal if at 5th.
Big solid back with good inside vision. Power back who will lower the shoulder to lay the hit on you. Great stiff arm with ok speed. A lot of potential ready for backup role. Grade: B-

10. Javorius Allen – USC 6’0 221 LBS – 4th or 5th round pick up.
Has ok speed with nice inside moves and vision. 1 or 2 cut back who runs with patience and follows his blockers. Solid back up or rotational runner. Grade: B-

IMO Gurley for the Cowboys should be the top choice, followed by Jay Ajayi. Our offense works best for the team when it slowly marches down the field and scores, which provides the defense needed rest and strategy time between ball possessions. Buck Allen from USC is very much that guy not so much the big break away but the steady 3-5 yards even if the blocking is stacked 8 in the box. Judge our choices by how they run with the defense stacked against them and I think you will agree with Gurley, Ajayi and Allen being our best fit. If we did not have this defense deficit I would make different choices.
I also think David Cobb is worthy of this list IMO.

I'd like to see more explosion in the backfield, myself.

Interesting takes on player weights...

Ameer Abdullah – Nebraska 5’9 198 LBS -- He’s a short guy, but not small by all means.
Duke Johnson – Miami 5’9 207 LBS – Needs to add muscle and weight for his frame to succeed in the NFL.

I never really paid a lot of attention to the RB position until Murray turned green. Since then I've notice RB rankings are all over the board after Gurley and Gordon. There seems to be a group of 5-6 that are the consenses next picks that much I've figured out. But reading the comments about each and the lack of consistency in analyzing them has me utterly confused. The only 2 thoughts I have at this point are 1) I'm glad we didn't pay Murray $8M a year and 2) I trust McClay to sort thru the RB mess.

excellent point and agree 100%.murray was so good last year because he got us those dirty yards even though he routinely saw 8 men in the box.i like breakaway speed too but if you cant power through some initial contact then i dont like them for our offense, thats why i like backs like gurley, ajayi and dj.all are tough runners and can get you those dirty yards.

Mike Davis should be in the top 10.

Gurley (if healthy)
Gordon
Ajayi
Johnson
Coleman
Allen
Langford
Yeldon
Davis
Abdullah

I could change a few around depending on the day, but that is probably what order I'd draft the RB's in right now.

I like Gurley, Gordon, Coleman, Ajayi, Abdullah...These are the backs that add something special to our attach. Abdullah although he looks small he really is not and he would just get lost to the D behind our OL. Gurley Im leary about taking a pounding at the next level + the knee wont allow him to be at 100% in 2015 imo. I really like Coleman then Ajayi and Gordon

I do not like, Johnson, Allen, Langford, Yeldon or Davis. While all good backs I just do not see anything special.

Gurley...Gordon...who the hell knows after that. I don't really like the thought of going RB at 27. That is why I put my trust in McClay.

Those are the only 2 who should even be considered at 27 imo. I like Ajayi and Coleman in a good sized trade down (12-15 picks), but not at 27. If both Gurley and Gordon are gone, maybe OO is there, or maybe even M. Peters if he's on the Cowboys board.

I don't know how Langford drops to 9.
Grade: B-

IMO he should be 3

When discussing the top Big Ten running backs, Langford is rarely mentioned in the same breath as Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon, Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah or Indiana's Tevin Coleman. But with 12 straight 100-yard rushing performances against Big Ten competition, Langford earned his way into the conversation. Langford is the type of prospect that grows on you and the gap behind Gordon and Abdullah isn't as big as most think.

Langford emerged as not only the most reliable and efficient back, but also the best all-around player at the position in 2013. Langford finished the 2013 season with 1,422 rushing yards and 18 rushing scores. He closed his career with a single-season school record-tying 22 touchdowns in 2014 to go with 1,522 yards.

Runs low to the ground with excellent pad level and energetic feet to get the most out of every touch. Displayed improved vision, balance and finishing ability as a senior.

Langford is a workhorse type with a hard-nosed, no-nonsense style of running the ball, getting stronger as the game progresses. Has a little shake-and-bake to him to extend runs, keeping his legs pumping through contact.

Langford really shines in areas where most young backs struggle like pass protection, reliability in the screen game and also the ability to get stronger and better as the game goes on.

I think he more like Muarry

Do we have the stable of RBs to take Gurley and let him set for 6 weeks before he plays

IMO, backs defeat tacklers in different ways. Neither McCoy nor Jamaal Charles runs over guys, but they still terrorize defenses.

I'd like to see an explosive back hitting the space that that fine Dallas OL creates, for a change.

I think dallas needs to use their first 4 picks on defense. Then grab a rb in the 5th. We have 4 rbs right nowo Mcfadden will start and he will be good just hopefully he can stay healthy. We haven't got to see what randle can do yet either.
