Dallas Cowboys 2018 Draft: The front office does it again!
https://thelandryhat.com/2018/04/30/dallas-cowboys-2018-draft-front-office/

The Dallas Cowboys are officially done with the 2018 NFL Draft. What did their selections tell us about the team moving forward?
The Dallas Cowboys front office has shown an ability consistently stay true to their team building vision.

Over the past few years, director of player personnel, Stephen Jones, and assistant director of player personnel Will McClay have employed a ‘best player available’ draft strategy.

They have balanced this with an accurate assessment of position depth to nail picks deep into day three of the draft and plug needs along the way.

This draft was a great example of that consistent approach, especially in the first three rounds...

Before the trash it first bunch have their play...this is the final analysis:

And although we have to see them play to know just how successful the draft class is, the Dallas Cowboys front office has continued to build the team in their vision. Though the playoff success hasn’t come and ring six hasn’t made its way to Arlington yet, it truly seems as though the right steps are being taken.

After all that work and preparation, the draft is over, just like that. What’s left for the Dallas Cowboys is nine brand new players and a veteran guy who brings some badly needed speed. So, how did the Cowboys do after a big three days?

First things first, do not read into draft grades, they are completely useless. No one has played a game yet and we need to see guys in action before rushing to any type of judgment. Ignore putting any stock in those grades. Instead, look at what Dallas did in terms of executing their strategy. Heading into the draft, the team had three big holes on their roster: guard, linebacker and wide receiver. We can certainly argue they needed defensive line and safety help, but the other three were glaring problems that begged for solutions.

The Cowboys checked off each one of their boxes in each of the first three rounds. Leighton Vander Esch may not have been my first choice in round one, but his upside was too good for the team to pass up. His athleticism was exactly what Dallas was looking for and now the team has more speed on the field to match what creative offenses are bringing these days. LVE needs work, but if his best football is still ahead of him, the Cowboys will have hit on a stud. Vander Esch was the apple of the teams’ eye and they got their man.

Round two brought some tense moments; the Cowboys almost took a wide receiver they really liked but passed on him in order to shore up the gaping hole at left guard with Connor Williams. The former Texas standout was the last really good interior offensive lineman left (even though he played tackle in college, he’ll play guard in Dallas) and if the Cowboys didn’t pull the trigger on Williams, it could have been a major issue. By drafting Williams, a steal at 50, the Cowboys made two very smart picks in the first two rounds...

A big plus for many of their draftees is their age. Of course, most players in the draft are young, but the Cowboys got very young guys who are still blossoming. Vander Esch turned 21 two months ago, Williams doesn’t turn 21 until next month, Gallup just turned 22, Armstrong is 20 (21 for the season), and Schultz will be 22 for the entire 2018 season. That’s a young group of players and if they get second contracts, they would be in the prime of their careers during those deals.

would have been nicer to bring in more with less players, im ok with the left guard, but we ll survive without the rest and a few players in teh top 2 rounds could have been had.

Stopped reading right here. Should be the other way around.

Buisness man..... Football guy. You do the math.

If I hadn't seen the final touches being added to an offensive group started in the lockout season...I might actually listen. Naw, that story doesn't hold water to the status of the offensive line right now, and a reliance upon the draft giving the Cowboys over $70 million in cap space next season.

Sorry, I won't be the handler of the bull in the pen for the stock show...shoveling crap by the shovel full.

LVE and Williams are solid picks who will play well almost immediately. Gallop could be good if he and dak can put in romo/ dez type work ethic.

I don't know. I'm always a believer that the draft is such a crap shoot that you're better off taking as many shots as you can. Yes, you stand a better chance of finding players in those early rounds, but if you trade multiple picks for one and he's a bust, then you would have been better off using the multiple picks even if one or two of them turned out to be no good.

That 70MM is a bit misleading because it doesn’t include Lawrence or Martin who could eat up 25-30MM of that real quick.

i would normally agree with you. but this time around, 10 players are not making the team. LVE was a need, i get that, but James was a need to and he could have been had. That would have made the defense so much better.

Did we need another TE, or RB, eh, we could have survived.

I like Collins, but i think bringing in 5 players would have been as good as well for this draft and at this time.

That's no problem...and if Irving comes around, him too. Space is very relevant starting next season...and very important.

What if that tight end turns out to be the next Jason Witten, or that running back is the next DeMarco Murray?

Not all 10 are going to make the team because not all 10 are going to turn out to be better than the other players we've got, but you take them hoping that they are because you've upgraded your roster.

MOST pressing needs...linebacker, offensive line, and receiver. All three players added for those short comings, are VERY relevant and up front.

One thing I do agree with for sure, I think that Connor Williams was the best pick of this draft.

Yes, but I think that Bo Scarborough will prove to be the steal of the draft, and that Wilson will prove to be one of the better receivers. He reminds me a bit of a taller Antonio Brown.

I'd love to see both, but I'm not sure how much either one of them will play.
