The Dallas Cowboys have done a very good job of managing the salary cap during the past several years. We have had more cap space than a majority of the teams in the league. Part of that salary cap room is due to the fact that we have not had to pay a QB franchise QB money.

I don't think it is much of a leap of faith that the Cowboys will sign Romo and give him his payday. That is going to eat up a significant chunk of our salary cap space and Newman will be coming up on his pay day soon as well.

The Cowboys could probably keep whoever they want on the roster, if they choose to, but it would severely limit what they could do in the future. So, I think we may let several productive players walk that are capable of being contributors on this team.

Julius Jones is one of the players that could continue to contribute to this team next year, but I see him as being as good as gone. He won't be worth the cap space it would take to keep him, and replacing him with a player of comparable ability in the draft should not be that hard to do.

Patrick Crayton is another guy that I would see as being on the bubble in that regard. He is a very solid contributor and is very valuable. The question is can he be replaced by a young guy for substantially less money. He is going to cost millions to keep. He was initially cheap, but isn't anymore.

Marion Barber will be another interesting piece of the puzzle. What exactly is he? A complimentary back, a franchise back, a third down back, a goal line back? I am sure some feel like he could be the franchise back. I don't think we would give him franchise back money. I have thought that we might be keeping his value down by playing him in a backup role so that we could resign him to a longer term deal for backup money. Time will tell.

The Patriots have created a dynasty by letting players who were replaceable go instead of overpaying them and it has allowed them to stay on top instead of going through the salary cap cycle. I hope that we make great decisions about when to let a player walk and when to keep him.

The one thing that I feel pretty comforable about is that I think that Romo will be signed to a long term deal. If the /cowboys are playing their cards right, they are looking for the NEXT Romo already.

Counting the cap room the Boys have left this year, and the amount they're projected to be under the cap next year, I don't have ANY worries about them getting the players they need to sign re-signed for the near future... I have read that between the two, they should have a little over 40 mil to play with...

IOW, you probably need to find something else to worry about, pal... :D

The Cowboys may be looking for the next Romo but not to replace but rather to serve as his backup or even as trade bait. Agree the Pats left some of their players leave instead of paying them the big bucks but they didn't play that game with Brady. Of course they lucky cause apparently he took less money to ensure the Pats were able to continue to keep/bring in enough players to stay on top. Manning on the other hand took top dollar. Don't know yet where Romo fits but sure hoping he leans a little towards Brady's view so the Cowboys can keep all the players we really need (and pick up a few FAs) to continue as a legit SB contender for years.

...could see the opportunity in Dallas and be cap friendly. But we have to be fair to Romo and realize that Dallas has not shown him that is a year to year SuperBowl contender the way NE has shown Brady.

It's easier to give a little back when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Given that I do hope it works out for Romo and the Dallas fans. The dry years after Aikman declined has shown me how rare it is to have a good QB and you need a system to take advantage of special talent when it is in it's prime.

Romo gives me a feeling taht this could be the start of something special and as long as we can stock the team with good talent year to year there is no reason why a Romo led squad can't be competitive.
