IRVING — The Dallas Cowboys made a move Monday to upgrade their offensive line depth by claiming right tackle Jordan Mills off of waivers from Chicago.

To make room for the addition of Mills on the 53-man roster, the Cowboys waived veteran linebacker Jasper Brinkley. The Cowboys guaranteed Brinkley $2 million in his two-year, $6.5 million deal he signed as a free agent in the offseason.

Brinkley’s contract, however, did include offset language, a source said, which reduces the Cowboys’ financial hit if he signs with another team...

Mills (6-5, 316), a fifth-round pick in 2013 out of Louisiana Tech, started 29 games over his first two NFL seasons for the Bears. But Chicago waived Mills to make room for two-time Pro Bowl right guard Kyle Long to switch to right tackle.

Cowboys Roster 2015: Meet Your New Swing Tackle, Jordan Mills.
http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2015...-2015-meet-your-new-swing-tackle-jordan-mills

The Dallas Cowboys finished their preseason with few questions, but one question mark was certainly at the tackle position. Of course, Dallas has one of, if not the, premier offensive lines in football, but one smart person once said your are only as good as your depth. That can't be truer than with the Cowboys' latest claim. Over the past few seasons, the Cowboys had the luxury of having a starting caliber tackle as their primary backup. Though Jermey Parnell certainly needed plenty of grooming to get there, he turned his development into a nice contract and promotion with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

His departure was one of the more underrated losses...

Mills won the starting right tackle position after a standout performance in the preseason (his rookie year.) Mills started every game in his rookie season and only gave up three sacks in 1,022 plays. Mills would eventually win the Brian Piccolo Award...

The Cowboys’ initial plan at the swing-tackle spot was to have Weems and third-round pick Chaz Green compete for the spot in training camp, but Green hurt his hip in the offseason, requiring surgery, and missed training camp. He will miss at least the first six regular-season games while on the reserve/physically unable to perform list for rehab.

Weems started three of the Cowboys’ four preseason games as he attempted to calm some fears about him being the main backup behind Tyron Smith and Doug Free.

The picture for the Dallas offensive line has now improved dramatically. The offensive tackle group now includes: Tyron Smith, Doug Free, Jordam Mills, Darion Weems, and PS John Wetzel.

Add that group to the offensive line's interior group: Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, Ronald Leary, La'el Collins, and Mackenzy Bernadeau. Free is 31 and Bernadeau is 29. All the rest of the interior are 26 or much younger.
