5:28 pm Cowboys OT Marc Columbo practiced today with the first team and could be ready to return to the starting line up. RB Tashard Choice did not practice but could be ready to go on Wednesday.

4:00 pm "If you can limit their big plays, you force them to have to drive the ball and that means they have to take more risks." -- Cowboys CB Terence Newman on the plan in trying to control the Eagles offense.

3:55 pm Cowboys CB Terence Newman was asked what has been the secret to shutting down the Eagles receivers. "I wouldn't say that we have shut them down, but it has given our confidence a boast," he said. "We are understanding what they are trying to do."

3:38 pm The Cowboys secondary has done an outstanding job of limiting big plays by Eagles WR DeSean Jackson. Cowboys S Ken Hamlin said that communication and being accountable in assignments has helped. Hamlin also said that the Cowboys did not run special coverages against Jackson in the two regular season meetings.

3:35 pm Cowboys WR Miles Austin has played well against Eagles CB Asante Samuel in the last two meetings. Austin said that he doesn't change his approach to playing against an opponent who is aggressive like Samuel or one who plays him soft. "I go get the ball," Austin said.

Indeed! He saved this season IMO. Without him, we would have easily gone 7-9 as Emmitt had predicted.

I have a huge man crush on Austin. He's strictly business leading up to game day.

The turning point of this season was the KC game, when Austin emerged and went buck wild!

One of the things we were all screaming about going into this season was how the Boys HAD to cut down on the penalties, that playoff teams don't commit lots of penalties...

Well, of course we didn't do that-- one of the few must-correct things that we didn't manage to correct-- but guess what?? It turns out we were all full of crap... I just looked, and of the ten teams with the most penalties this season, SEVEN of them made the playoffs...

This really startled me, but it's true... thoughts??

Something I noticed a few weeks back as well. Good passing offenses can overcome 1st and 15 or 1st and 20. Run/grind offenses cannot. This league this season is a very pass happy league and the penalties are mitigated to an extent.

"I go get the ball." That was the one quote that really caught my eye. He is only getting better.

The difference between the most penalized team and the least penalized team is only 3-4 penalties a game for 30-40 yards.

The Cowboys have been in position and ready to play on defense each play but a couple. The only time the Eagles had big plays last weekend was when we had confusion between Carp and Scandrick, or when Carp was getting flat out beat in coverage.

That's interesting and it brings to mind one of my favorite quotes........

"If you aint cheatin, you aint tryin"

How many holds occur for each one that's called?
How many illegal contact or PIs occur for each one that's called?

It's a tough, competitive leauge. Sometimes a little cheatin is just the bi-product of effort.

I always felt an offense should have as many called holding penalties as sacks allowed. And if its not someone's not cheatin.....oops, I mean tryin hard enough.

Guess the league has been creating new penalties all the time (trying to help offense and score more points ) and so good teams which try hard have a few penalties more. But at the same time since they try hard they overcome and win also.

Ball control , mistake free (parcells style ) football is outdated and it has been a passing league for some time.:)

We've done okay in the penalty department as of late. Just keep in mind that we had Ron Winter as the official during the last game, and he loves his face time.

I love getting Miles Austin the ball, but Asante Samuel scares the hell out of me. It seems he's about half a step off of getting an int. everytime we throw his direction.

Yup, but that half step turns into forty extra yards for Austin! Keep on gambling Asante, you might get one eventually! Or not.

I think Miles really helps out there because he is so aggressive in coming back for the ball. If a couple of those throws had been to Roy Williams, Samuel would have gotten those.
