Selected: Fifth round, 172nd overall
Size: 6-2, 227
School: USC
POSITIVES
Buehler (pronounced BEE-ler) can boom kickoffs into the end zone with good hang time on a regular basis. That's the primary reason the Cowboys' drafted him. His athleticism is a nice bonus. Buehler put on a show at the combine, running a 4.62 40 and putting up 25 bench-press reps. Those numbers are good by linebacker standards. If needed to kick field goals, Buehler is very accurate for 40 yards and under (20-for-22 at USC). Another bonus: Buehler has been friends with Nick Folk since they met at a kicking camp a few years ago, easing any concern about tension between the kickers adding to the Valley Ranch soap opera scene.
NEGATIVES
You can question the wisdom of drafting a kicker when there's a Pro Bowler on your roster. But Buehler doesn't have many flaws, in terms of evaluating him for his planned role. His impressive leg strength doesn't translate to success on long-distance field goals. His long at USC was 49 yards, and he was 6-of-11 from over 40 yards. But Folk excels on long-range field goals, so that isn't an issue if Folk is healthy.
COWBOY FIT
Buehler should make the team as a kickoff specialist. The Cowboys plan to maximize his value - and perhaps justify filling two roster spots on kickers - by using him in other roles on special teams. Those roles could range from holding on extra points and field goals to blocking on kickoff and punt returns to covering punts. If Folk doesn't recover from hip surgery as anticipated, Buehler will fill the point-scoring kicker role.
TODD McNAIR, USC RB coach/former special teams coordinator
"He's a great athlete. He played the fullback position and safety for us (on scout team). He's big, he's strong, he's fast, he's physical. He's just a real good athlete. .... He'll be able to (play special teams roles other than kickoffs). He's a tough kid. He's a hitter. He's physical. He's not a wimpy kicker. He's tough and competitive. He'll be able to do whatever they ask of him. ... I've seen him put four or five balls through the uprights (on kickoffs) in one game. He's got a tremendous leg. He'll put the ball through the back of the end zone, and he gets great hang time. He's definitely a weapon. Our guys got so used to him putting the ball through the end zone that they relaxed sometimes, and it hurt us the rare times he didn't get all of the ball. ... He's not your averaged kicker athletically and personality wise. He's a funny guy who they'll love to have around. He'll fit right in."
