Size: 6-0, 198
Combine 40-yard dash: 4.58
POSITIVES
As a converted cornerback, McBath's biggest strength is his coverage ability. He's effective in man coverage against slot receivers or tight ends and developed a knack for making plays during the course of his college career. He intercepted seven passes last season and returned two for touchdowns, including one against Mississippi in the Cotton Bowl before suffering a hamstring injury that has healed. McBath, who starred for a Class 3A state championship basketball team at Gainesville High, has a 38-inch vertical leap, which helps him battle for the ball with bigger receivers. His intelligence is also one of his best assets.
NEGATIVES
There are questions about how effective McBath will be against the run. He played against a lot of pass-happy offenses in the Big 12 and isn't a big hitter, although he doesn't shy away from contact. He struggles to get off blocks, especially against bigger receivers. His size is only adequate.
COWBOY FIT
McBath, who is scheduled to visit Valley Ranch this month, fits the Cowboys' plan to use safeties who are strong in coverage. He would enter training camp behind Gerald Sensabaugh, who signed a one-year contract, on the depth chart. If the Cowboys don't take a safety in the second round, McBath would be a solid mid-round pick.
TEXAS TECH DEFENSIVE COORDIANATOR RUFFIN McNEILL
"He's a really good athlete. He has good change of direction, good explosion. He has big corner type of ability because we recruited him as a corner. When we wanted to go to any type of man concept, Darcel was the guy who would walk down and cover the slot guy. With Darcel in the game, I had no hesitation about putting him on any receiver. That gave me great flexibility. It makes you more versatile. ... He does a great job in the run game. We would put him down in the box when we needed him there. He's used to [playing the run] from safety depth or we would put him in the box late. ... I thought Darcel was a solid tackler for us. He made a lot of open-field tackles. He has that strength and that punch. He had to make a lot of plays for us. He's a solid, reliable tackler, but he's not afraid to put the hat on you, either. ... He has a nose for the ball. He does a good job of playing routes, and he does a good job of going for the ball. He thinks the ball is his in the air. And he's trying to get the ball in the end zone when he gets it in his hands on an interception or fumble recovery. He's trying to score, a la Ed Reed. ... He's played in the Big 12 and faced great competition. He's defended the pass the whole time here, especially in the spring against our offense. I think those things are plusses. ... He's a quick learner. He's not a rep guy. He's got his degree. He graduated early, so he's a smart guy. He knew the checks and audibles. He ran our defense on the back end. He's a smart football player. He'd make decisions for us, based on formation, and make sure we were in the right coverage. ... He was unanimously voted a captain by his teammates. Not one problem the whole time he was here. ... He's been coached by a former NFL coach in [Tech safeties coach] Carlos Mainord. Carlos still coaches like he's in the NFL. [McBath] has been trained like he's in the NFL. He's used to that intensity."
