Dallas Cowboys K Dan Bailey on becoming a restricted free agent in 2014: ‘I would love to stay here if I could. But we’ll just kind of see what happens’

Since joining the Cowboys in 2011 as an undrafted rookie, Dan Bailey has established himself as the most accurate kicker in franchise history. He’s made 90.8 percent of his field-goal attempts and converted his last 21 tries in 2013.

Now, Bailey is set to become a restricted free agent. Because of his status, the Cowboys have the right to match any offer made to Bailey by another club. If they decline to do so and let Bailey walk, they may be entitled to draft-choice compensation depending on the amount of the qualifying tender they extend to the kicker. Bailey’s situation and how the Cowboys choose to handle it could be affected by the four-year, $15 million contract extension Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould signed last week.

“That’s something that when that comes up I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Bailey said. “But I love it here. It’s a great place to kick, a great organization. I would love to stay here if I could. But we’ll just kind of see what happens. Hopefully I’ll be able to stick around a little longer.”

The Cowboys appear ready to make a serious effort to keep him in the fold. Since the start of 2012, no team has been involved in as many close games as the Cowboys, who have played 22 decided by seven points or fewer during that period.

“He’s a great kicker,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of Bailey last month. “He does what he does maybe as well as anyone does what they do on our football team.”

Hopefully we find a way to keep him at a good price. Clearly he wants to stay so that's a good start.

I hate changing kickers every few years. And Bailey is money.

he is a rfa so he is going nowhere. it just a matter of tendering him. if you put a 2nd rnd tender on him thats about 2 mil, a 1st is about 2.8 or just sign him to a long term deal. the options are ours, not his

The second we sign him he'll probably be terrible. Just seems like our luck.

The guy is really good though. He doesn't have the biggest leg but he is money within 45 yards.

Don't care if he stays or goes. There is probably 25 teams with a Dan Bailey. The NFL is ripe with good kickers nowadays.

We have to give Bailey whatever he wants and we cannot allow him to walk.

Good kickers are hard to find and we need to keep this one.

This. He's a kicker. A good one, but a kicker. I'd like him to continue with the Cowboys, but a kicker isn't worth breaking the bank for.

I don't think they need to break the bank to keep him. I could be wrong, though.

Fretting over a few extra hundred thousand for a young and proven kicker is ridiculous considering the millions they waste on longshot linemen every year,,,, pay the man and be happy there's one important position on the team that isn't in serious trouble. Crimony,,, how many years did we wander in the desert trying to find a decent kicker?

Then we should attempt to keep him. I'm all for it but don't want to break the bank.

Are you kidding me?

He's our MVP in 2013.

Of course extend him in 2014.

This is the only guy this offense had week in and week out to do the scoring.

Not to mention his KOs.

Killer.

A true keeper.

Thanks, Dan Bailey for a professional job.
