Every NFL Team's Best Non-Hall of Famer

There are only six men on the planet who played in the NFL in the last 75 years, earned five or more first-team All-Pro nods and are not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame despite being eligible. Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley is one of those six men.

Howley also played a major role on two Super Bowl teams. He won a Lombardi Trophy in the 1971 season, and one year prior, he became the first and only player in NFL history to win Super Bowl MVP as a member of the losing team.

Howley has been victimized by the fact the Cowboys had so many stars in his time. He might be the most glaring Hall of Fame snub there is.

Chuck Howley, Cliff Harris, Drew Pearson, Harvey Martin

All should be in the HOF by now. Way past time to right this wrong.

I love Chuck Howley too...but IMO Drew Pearson and Cliff Harris are the Cowboys most neglected from the HOF. Both were members of the 70s All Decade team. Pearson (the original #88) was a 4 time All Pro, 5 times a pro bowler. Harris was a 4 time first team All Pro and 6 time pro bowler.

Being All Pro is way better than just being a pro bowler. All Pro means you were the best of the best.

No disrespect to Chuck Howley. I saw him play in person 5 times in my life and he was a great LB. I would love to see him in the HOF. But Drew P and Cliff H are more deserving in my view.

All good arguments but this is what makes the HOF a very special place. Some great players don’t get in. The good news is it’s never over. Some are even inducted posthumously.

The NFL begun in 1920 coming up on a 100 years and the HOF begun inducting HOF members in 1963 with 17 members initially. And as of 2018 there is only 318 members.

I visited there in 1971 before there were any Cowboys enshrined.

A friend of mine sports writer John McClain here in Houston has tried to push the nomination of Chuck Howley for a while and just has not gotten the votes required.

As for the Cowboys, too many HoF caliber players have been snubbed by the HoF. I use to think it was only a matter of time but now it's obvious many of these guys have just been forgotten by an ungrateful and inconsiderate selection process. It is up to Cowboys nation to get these guys recognized one at a time. We have enough voices to unify and make this happen. We should make a concerted effort to adopt one player per season to campaign for his induction. WE will not be ignored! Starting now, I nominate Chuck Howley for 2019 enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Who's with me and how loud will your voice be for this endeavor?

Those 70's Cowboy teams suffer from Stealers biases and Rooney needing to get his.
Winning championships definitely influenced the writers who vote on inductions. Those 70’s Steeler teams I believe have 9 members in , only second to the 60’s Packers which have 12 Inductees.

No doubt if the Cowboys had won a couple more Super Bowls in the 70’s we would have recieved more recognition and most likely more Inductees. Results have consequences. Winning does matter. The HOF is also about the Impact.

Ive often argued if the Cowboys would have won those two NFL Title games vs Packers which they were capable of and went on to win first two Super Bowls the trophy would be named the Landry instead of the Lombardi.

The Cowboys went to 12 championship games in 17 years. 7 in one decade including 5 SB. We could have set records never to be broken again like The Celtics and UCLA of that era set in Basketball.

I know the consistency we had with 20 consecutive winning seasons was and still is a record but we could have done so much more when you consider how close we were to appearing in at least 10 Super Bowls and winning all 5 we were in.

And we had great enough teams to win all of those. Again, it’s why results have consequences and not winning more has resulted in not more of our great players getting into Hall.

it's criminal that Chuck Howley and Lee Roy Jordan are not in the hall.
they were the best LB duo of their generation.

OL Ralph Neely is another who has been forgotten...4x all-pro...2x pro-bowl...2x Super Bowl champ...voted all-decade 60's.
They weren’t as great as the Steelers duo who got in.

Many Cowboys were deserving but part of the problem is with the success Landry had over 3 decades much was credited to Toms system.

Landry is the only HC in NFL history to take 4 different QB’s on the same team in three different decades to a championship game. Remarkable stat.

If you recall Staubach retirement speech he credited Landry’s system.

Tom was only HC who up until 1973 was also the OC and DC while being HC.

Landry was IMO the greatest genius in the history of the NFL. He was the only Engineer to be a HC and arguably the smartest to ever coach.

But he also said the reason the Cowboys came up short sometimes was the lack execution of his plays from his players.
