The Cowboys got the attention of the FAA after a news conference in which team officials described how they used a drone — operated by Southern Methodist University staff — to shoot rookie minicamp practices in May at Valley Ranch. In a written statement, FAA officials said they contacted the Cowboys to “explain the proper procedure for obtaining the necessary exemption.”

The Cowboys have purchased a drone, but it did not appear that they applied for a waiver yet.

“Our recent use of this technology on the practice field has been evolving and very much a learning process,” team spokesman Rich Dalrymple wrote via email. “As we move forward, we will make every effort to have a full understanding of, and adhere to, all of the federal regulations that are involved.”

The FAA says the rules are intended to keep the skies safe. Additional waivers are also needed to fly near airports and certain helipads. Major outdoor sporting events are off limits to drones.

Mairena said the launching of drones to record practices would be the type of use the FAA would likely approve. He said it’s in a limited area, at low altitude and away from large crowds.

“If Mr. [Jerry] Jones decides to make an application, I’m sure that there will be many more NFL teams and professional teams that will follow suit,” Mairena said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is looking into the use of the drones by two other teams, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots

I'm interested in the FAA jurisdiction here. Below 700 or 1200 feet in most areas is uncontrolled airspace.
