Dallas Cowboys: Rico Gathers took hundreds of snaps at offensive tackle

The Dallas Cowboys knew what they were getting into when they drafted former Baylor basketball star Rico Gathers with their final selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. Not having played organized football since junior high, Gathers was attempting to make the difficult leap from the hardwood to the field, on a professional level.

The Cowboys drafted Gathers in the sixth round (217th overall) with their eyes wide open, fully understanding that he was a developmental player. The then 22-year old’s amazing athletic ability was simply too impressive to ignore. Gathers spent his entire rookie campaign on the Cowboys practice squad.

Working on his own, with Dallas’ tight end coach and legend Mike Pope, who recently retired, and with the Cowboys new tight end coach Steve Loney; Gathers took as many reps as anybody did on the team in throughout the year according to head coach Jason Garrett...

I can't get enough of my pet cat's news. That vid was impressive. I wish someone would analysis his blocking skills.
That would tell the tale.

Leary wasn't an unknown. In fact, Leary was very well known. Teams knew he had a degenerative knee condition and stayed away from him. Without it, Dallas rated him as a 3rd round talent.

Where was he drafted? As to non-drafted, how many have the Cowboys turned into good players? How well known were Ratliff and Romo?

What round did Geoff Swaim come in?

Talent comes from different points...give the kid a chance.

Is this guy going to be able to ride on the practice squad again this year? If he is making strides would another team sign him to the active roster? He does have a sweet practice squad contract.

I'm excited to hear more though, for some reason this and Jaylon news are just fun to hear.

Bang! Don't argue with a former college LB. LOL

You would think someone that big and fast would be able to rush the QB. Dual position, maybe? TE/DE. A man can dream, can't he!

Probably already better than Free

That's cold-blooded, man.
Free is actually a very good run blocker.
He just doesn't have the agility anymore.

Anybody that's old enough is thinking Rayfield Wright about Rico.
He came in as a 6'6" 225# TE in 1967, after being mostly a basketball star. (He couldn't even make his high school football team)
He also got reps at OT and DL in his first 2 years.
He got his first start in '69 when Ralph Neely got hurt, and it was against the legendary Deacon Jones. Well, he played so impressively that he continued at RT all the way to the HOF, beefing up to 270.

Rico is 6'6" 285, and has the Big Cat's quick feet.

Would be a good story.

Rico's first task will be to make the 53 roster as a situational player. Can he be an asset blocking in short yardage and goal line, can he be a threat as a receiver in the red zone, and can he be a blocker on the FG team? If yes, he makes the 53. If no to all, he won't be kept just because he's developing. To be on the 53, you have to serve some current purpose.
