Hey everyone since the bye week is here and there is no game to focus on I have a question for all of us to debate! What do you think the reason is for the secondary playing so well ? Their have been so many recent changes I'm not very sure if you can really point out 1 single factor. Let's take a look at some of the changes we have seen.

-----------------------------------------------------

1) First Year Secondary Coach Joe Baker- Here is some info for him for those of you that would like to know more - http://www.dallascowboys.com/team/coaches/roster/joe-baker

2) Safeties Coach Gregg Jackson - Here is some info about him also. http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/2016/02/17/greg-jackson-set-join-cowboys’-coaching-staff-safeties-coach

Both these coaches have good resume's IMO and i think they work very well together from what we have seen on the field. There is a swag and confidence that was not there before.

------------------------------------------------------

3) Byron Jones - The move to FS and the ability to focus on 1 position has been a fantastic move - the 2 pass breakups we saw recently 1 vs AJ Green and 1 vs Cobb last week is just a glimpse of things to come as he gets more and more comfortable with the position. Typically plays like that in the past would have been Td's. His ability to lock up Slot receivers and TE's Is a luxury most teams don't have, we are very fortunate.

4) Anthony Brown - IMO Should be talked or at least discussed as a Defensive Rookie Of the Year candidate maybe thats my cowboy fandom speaking but make no mistake we found a gem in the 6th round. In 6 games we have not missed a beat with Scandrick being hurt or 2nd half of the packer game when Mo went down. He is always in great position or seems to be. Browns Stat line so far this year - 26 total tackles -- 20 solo tackles -- 6 assists -- 2 pass defensed -- 1 FF -- His value so far this year has been immense and at the moment only Cowboy fans know about it.

5) JJ Wilcox -- I was a JJ Wilcox supporter to start years ago i will admit --- The biggest issue that stood out were the angles he took ( they were really bad ) But ok i also thought coaching the rookie would fix this when watching film or in practice. But it just never seemed to get any better. He really just looked lost out there to put it bluntly. Pre-season this year was no different he actually looked worse and this was against 2nd and 3rd stringers and personally i was ready to move on from him. I couldn't believe he made the final roster. Having said all that! Wilcox has been a nice surprise and earned some of my trust back. I am happy to eat some Humble Pie ummm ummm ummmm ummm. The new coaches are obviously doing a fantastic job with him he has been put in single high safety a lot this year and has played well so far. Besides a couple small things like not wrapping up when tackling. I am still not 100% comfortable he will always be in the right position or take the right angle BUT through 6 games there is more to like then to complain about, which is a very good thing.

6) Brandon Carr - He gets a lot of hate on every board i have been on , for the contract he signed his production vs Cost and ETC ETC. I like Carr as a player and person, he is always healthy and plays hard. Hell he took a pay cut. He has had a very solid year this year so far, you do not hear or see or hear his name for either reason good or bad so no news is good news IMO.

7) Mo Claiborne - Mo has been hell and back with this fan base, for the record i have always liked MO and always hoped he would pan out, i have never wanted to get rid of him. I was on another board but i started a few threads over the years in support of him. With his draft status, Injuries, Losing his starting job 2 times, and he actually left camp once in frustration. Having said all that, he is healthy , he is playing at the level we all expected when he first came here from LSU. Good for him, whats not to like about a story of perseverance like his. He is stronger now on a mental level having gone through all this. He is playing with a new found confidence and is leading this secondary, Thats the player we wanted all along. Yes we all wish he played liked this when he first got here but he is now past is the past. Mo has come into his own and now that his stock is beginning to rise it is time to lock him up. You do not let him go ! Jerry do your job! sign the man !

8) Barry Church has always been a solid tackler and is playing extremely well this year. Stat Line is as follows - 42 tackles -- 32 solo -- 10 assists --1 FF -- 2 Int. What more can i say Barry is balling.

9) Orlando Scandrick - Incomplete but is a vocal leader of this team hopefully he is back soon

---------------------------------------------

10) Typing this kills me because i hate this reasoning or excuse but to be fair and balanced i will! Contract Year - Claiborne, Church and Wilcox are all unrestricted free agents at the end of this year and Carr could also be gone - so big decisions on the horizon.

11) Was it simply moving Mo and Carr back to the sides of the field they feel comfortable on. This may not seem like a big deal But is it ? Would seem logical to play better when your comfortable or is this overestimated ?

12) Is it the offense seemingly scoring on what seems like every drive ( i know they haven't but seems like they have ) so it puts our D in favorable positions to know the pass is coming ! Or is it that we control the clock on O with the best 3rd down % so the defense gets limited exposure. Hmmmmm

I Personally think it is a combination of all the factors EXCEPT the CONTRACT YEAR excuse or reasoning. I will never agree or see that side of the argument. I really think the new coaches have given a breath of fresh air to our guys and put them in the best possible to succeed.

Maybe Jerry put something in the water supply ? LOL

Taking everything into consideration what do you think ?

If i have left anything out please feel free to add

The secondary has been phenomenal.

The key is Byron Jones. After years and years without a true center-field free safety, Dallas finally has one. He allows the corners to play tight with a lot more man coverage. Jones can help over the top with Carr.

The other key, obviously, is the sudden emergency of Mo Claiborne. Got to re-sign him now. He's finally found his confidence.

Church has always been a solid player, but without a true free safety, he got exposed.

I can't explain why Wilcox is playing well. Must just be contagious.

Glad to see Wilcox improving. Dude can hit. One of my favorite plays by him is when he knocked the crap out of OBJ.

Mo Claiborne spent all offseason building his body up and improving his footwork.. Finally healthy too. That's huge.
Then Byron Jones continuing to develop and playing mostly full time at safety.

Both of those things helped the overall unit immensely.

New passing game coordinator. We have been routinely taking the opponents best receiver away. Last week it was Nelson, the week before Green. In my mind that's game planning.

Couldn't agree more! Been making this point in numerous posts recently. Whatever he's asked to do, he does phenomally well. He's like a more athletic Woodson that doesn't tackle quite as well. Covers the slot like nobody's business and his rangy/intelligent play in single high as you point out allows everyone else to do so much more - including Barry. He's our version of Earl Thomas and I think he's destined for all-pro/pro-bowl honors this year. His presence solidifies the entire unit.

Isn't it obvious? The reason is Dak Prescott. He taught these guys how to cover.

On a serious note. I think it's a combination of things. Mo continuing to improve, Jones taking over at safety. Carr sticking to the left side. Brown showing up as a rookie. And probably just the guys finally getting more comfortable with the scheme.

The contract year thing isn't an excuse, it's something you avoid ignoring at all costs. Never write a contract for a guy that sucked for 3 years and was only good is his last. Dallas finally got away from that stupidity a few years ago. Franchise him next year then let him walk and replace with a high pick. Don't make the Ratliff mistake again.

I knew there were people who feel the way you do, I am not one of those people I believe maybe MO took longer to develop and now that he is you don't give a player like that away it's an investment but this is my opinion, I respect yours I just do not agree.

The secondary has been such an amazing surprise. Brown is looking like a straight draft ROBBERY, and if Jaylon Smith works out, we could be one legit pass-rusher away from an AWESOME defense. I don't personally want to give Mo a contract based on 1 year of production, but if we could franchise him, and concentrate on the D-Line, watch out. Just look what our secondary is doing with ZERO pass-rush. Imagine what they'll do when the QB has no time. I'm getting giddy at the thought of that as I type this. GO 'Boys.
