Dallas Cowboys tight end position training camp preview
http://thelandryhat.com/2016/07/23/dallas-cowboys-tight-end-position-preview/
Well, here we are a week away from the 2016 Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California.
Which means we are also a week away from beginning the process of finding out just what this Cowboys team is going to be made of.
Will the position groups that have glaring question marks show that they are better than projected, or will they prove to be more cause for concern than anyone could have anticipated?
One thing is for sure. As long as number 82 is lining up outside of an offensive tackle, the Dallas Cowboys know they don’t have to worry about the tight end position.
This year’s tight end group features 4 of the same players from last year’s roster but also includes an intriguing addition that may take a while to develop but has absolute upside to become a red zone threat at the least...
...Rico Gathers- 22 years old- 6’8″ 275 pounds
Gathers was a surprise sixth round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft for the Dallas Cowboys.
The reason why it was such a surprise? Gathers didn’t play a single snap of football in college.
Rico was a star basketball player at Baylor University, receiving All-Big 12 accolades while playing power forward. He was a rebounding specialist- recording a school record 28 rebounds in a game.
We have seen great rebounders in basketball become star tight ends in the past two decades- notably Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and Jimmy Graham.
The ability to elevate, track the ball, and come down with it are skills that translate very well to winning jump balls and making contested catches.
There is no doubt that the athleticism and size are there.
He is one of the more intriguing fringe-players to watch throughout training camp and preseason.
Rico will need to prove that he can learn the Cowboys playbook, develop as a blocker, and refine his route running if he wants to press for a roster position.
At the very least, his monstrous size and athletic ability will make him a great candidate for the practice squad if he still needs time before he can impact the Cowboys on Sundays.
