Here’s why the Dallas Cowboys won’t need a top ten defense to be successful in 2016.

Defense! Defense! Defense! It’s the most important group of a football team because it’s the unit that wins championships. The Dallas Cowboys will convince us that the best defense is a good offense. Will a combination of Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Ezekiel Elliott and Jason Witten be the unstoppable force able to plow through teams? It’s a revolutionary approach, but Cowboy Nation knows that our front office turns left when everyone goes right.

Defense winning championships is a tried and true method. It’s a consensus that one of the best defenses ever was the 1985 Chicago Bears (15 – 1). It’s often forgotten that the Bears had a very prolific offense that featured Hall of Fame running back Walter Peyton. The Bears offense ranked second by scoring 456 points and first in rushing attempts (610), rushing yards (2761) and rushing touchdowns (27).

Defensively, the Bears were led by Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary, three time pro bowler Wilbur Marshall and Hall of Fame defensive end Richard Dent. That unit allowed the fewest points (198), the fewest yards (4135), the fewest first downs (236) and the most turnovers (54). Simply put, they were insanely dominant on both sides of the ball.

The 1993 version of our Cowboys – Jimmy Johnson‘s team – finished the regular season with a 12 – 4 record. Led by a trio of Hall of Famers – Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin – the offense finished second in points scored (376), rushing yards (2161) and rushing touchdowns (20)...

I think defense is still critical in winning. Once you get to post season you will be facing other top offense and defenses, if your defense is unable to make key stops or get turnovers it becomes very hard to stop other top teams. You can get by playing a bottom rung team but you go in vs the top teams your weakness starts being exposed and they have the means to exploit it.

I think Byron Jones may help change that takeaway ratio problem. But it's a wait and see on the pass rush, even when DLaw and Gregory return.
I think they can change this, even if it gets us to the positive side of the ratio, but still need to show it on the field.

This defense maybe not, but the 70's and 90's team had a defense that made the difference. A very good to great defense will take you a long way to a Superbowl, Look at the ravens an at best average o with a great defense, the 84 Bears (or was it 86) Bears, an at best average O with a tremendous defense. Look at any Steelers team that won it, an at best average O with a great defense.

You may be right, but I still believe a very good to great defense wins a superbowl in almost any year.

I agree turnover was important but late game and key stops in the game are also critical. You can't afford to go down 2 or 3 scores down vs top team. Defense will have to step up and produce. I said you can get away with some weakness vs lower end teams but facing the big boys you better be able to hold your own or they will run you over.

Most of the time, I observe one side of the ball benefitting from the strength of the other side of the ball. For the 85 bears, it was the O feeding off the D.

I think last year for Denver, it was the O, feeding off the D. In the Kurt Warner Rams days, it was the D benefiting from the Greatest show on Turf...

The NE teams seem to have a lot of balance. But now, I think they live primarily off Brady and Belicheck and their experience and drive...

we are going to need our offense to play like an Elite offense....

You aint kidding. The most telling stat from 2015 is that we were dead last in the league in turnover differential--11 takeaways to 33 giveaways.

I hate to use a JG term, but really you have to be good in "all 3 phases" ST,O,D.
Being great in either O or D can do it, if the other one is decent and doesnt make mistakes.

The Saints offense carried the load and the defense allowed a lot of yards, but they were playing with a lead. It forced teams to play catch-up and a combination of quarterback pressure plus a need to score points quickly helped contribute to a lot of turnovers for the defense. This is the approach our Cowboys are taking.

In 2014, the Cowboys finished second in rushing yards and ended with a 12 – 4 record. The offense ranked 5th in points and 7th in yards. The defense ranked 15th in points allowed but ranked 2nd in turnovers. Those numbers look very similar to the Saints in 2009.

The two biggest problems with this theory:

1. The 2009 Saints ranked 3rd in defensive passer rating. They had an elite pass defense. The 2014 Cowboys ranked 13th (and 20th in 2015). Apples and oranges.

2. The 2010 Saints offense had more plays with the lead (517) than the 2009 version (488), and yet their defense fell to 15th in defensive passer rating in 2009. So it was something else besides simply having leads that caused their opponents to turn the ball over in 2009. Probably just better defense.

One of them balanced teams. How'd they do that? But seriously it generally comes down to the QB of the team w the help of the defense; not vice versa. Of course there are outliers, etc. but generally top QBs get ya to winning in the playoffs.
