Dallas Cowboys: Will DeMarcus Lawrence be on the roster in 2018?

http://thelandryhat.com/2017/07/16/dallas-cowboys-will-demarcus-lawrence-roster-2018/

...The team from a personnel standpoint seems to be saying that they do not want Lawrence to leave but they are prepared for his departure if a bidding war ensues over his contract during free agency.

Lawrence has made some big plays during his time with Dallas but one could easily say that players such as David Irving or Maliek Collins would not have similar results. The only way I see the team bringing back Lawrence is if he has an 8 plus sack total at the end of the season.

That would not only show his growth in this defensive scheme but the ability to continually get to opposing quarterbacks. Probably the most important thing for Lawrence will be his ability to stay healthy and out of trouble.

If he can play a full 16 games with consistency and productivity, the Cowboys could feel compelled to pay him for his future potential/production. Anyway you look at it is an interesting dilemma....

no.

the problem is, though 3 years he has been extremely inconsistent, so barring a situation where he has a so/so season and signs a 1 year prove it deal, he likely will play well enough that some other team will over pay or will under perform enough that we aren't interested in bringing him back. Besides, assuming Lawrence was not a half season wonder and can build on his late 2017 success, I like what we have at the DE position without Lawrence. We're missing a top end player, but Taco/Irving and Tapper/Mayowa are pretty good pieces to work with.

Why does it matter at this point?

He has a year to prove his worth. Any real analysis into the situation is really a waste of time.

Many people on here wanted Dallas to sign Nick Perry a few months ago because he had one double digit sack season...even though his first four seasons were riddled with inconsistency. We will have cap space and Lawrence has believers in Dallas so if he has a 11 sacks season, we could make him very rich as well. All it takes is one double digit season.

Too speculative.

They are just trying to set a judgement point to see if he earns retention...based upon their own standard for under achieving. But a person can watch the earn it standard, independent of the reasons they chose for being in question for next season.

ALERT: I'm told #Cowboys position re Demarcus Lawrence failed test NOT pot but rather amphetamines/meds. Feel good about appeal @1053thefan

8:00 PM - 21 Apr 2016

Lawrence was at least not abusing a social type enhancer for mood. He was slowed by the suspension and injury following. He was trying to get well in the first place.

Yes, I'm aware he was suspended once. Article said "a couple of times."

Damn, I provided the incident with a comment...and already knew that you had knowledge of a single suspension.

Agree with "why does it matter now".

I'm gonna laugh when he blows up...and starts taking over games..He's got that kind of ability. Question is...does he start free styling on his own to make plays...or does he continue to carry out Marinellie's dumb orders and be the good soldier? As soon as we figure out Marinellie is the thing that is holding this team back...the better.

Obviously the jury is still out on this one. If he blows up you try to resign him at a reasonable deal, but you have to have team protection for suspensions, etc. This isn't squeaky clean Zack Martin or Travis Frederick we are talking about. The team would be idiotic not to stir his past failures and transgressions into his contract.

If he turns in another JAG season then you pay him as just a guy, unless you have better player options available, and you still weigh in his past record. Injuries don't really concern me or factor into the equation as much for me unless the injury impairs his future ability to play. Some injuries are just bad luck.

We let Jimmy Smith go far too early. That one will leave a mark.

The question is are you going to laugh when he gets suspended again? He seems to have a propensity to do that as well.

I will say I am not totally sold on Marinilli either. If Ivey doesn't make the squad and be a productive player after Marinelli's draft celebration when we drafted Ivey I think we should start leaning toward coming to the conclusion that Marinilli doesn't have a ******* clue what he is doing.
