Over the last couple of weeks, we've looked at the playing time of the Cowboys' recent rookie classes, wondered who the 2013 breakout player could be and how much playing time the 2013 draft class could see this year.

Along the way, we touched on a couple of names that will likely be Cowboys franchise players in a couple of years: the Cowboys' young guns. In five years or so some of the young guns on the current roster will be the faces of the Dallas Cowboys. So today, we'll look at who the top ten guys under the age of 25 are.

The reason we're going for 25 is that Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com last year looked at the league's top ten players under the age of 25, and 25 felt like a good cut-off age. When I then set out to compile the list for the Cowboys, I thought it'd be an easy exercise. Before I even started compiling names, I thought that I'd have to add an addendum with the players not making the list. Turns out, that wasn't the case, as some of the players that I was thinking of for this list are already 25 years or older: DeMarco Murray, Bruce Carter, Dan Bailey are all 25, Phil Costa, Sean Lissemore and Orlando Scandrick will all be 26 by the time the season starts and Sean Lee will even turn 27 on July 22nd this year - those guys are not spring chicken anymore.

So without further ado, here are the top ten young guns on the Cowboys' roster, all of whom will still be under 25 at the start of the 2013 regular season on September 5, 2013.

Exactly. After the first 3 it goes downhill. And I can't even believe that Sean Lee is going to be 27 when the season starts! It feels like I'm still waiting to see what a full season with him will be like and he's already that old.

For real. Matt Johnson didn't play a down and he's #5?

But that's bloggingtheboys for you.

He barely practiced!!!we have unrealistic expectations from Matt johnson,i would consider it a great success if he can just stay healthy for the whole season and be a part time player and play on ST.

When it consist of players like Johnson at #5, who has only practiced a few times and has not even played one snap in a game, it makes you shake your head. They could have listed Coale and McSurdy just as well as several of these guys. This is just a " I hope these guys pan out" list that is not based on potential or talent, just hope.

Cole Beasley is on the list but not Terrence Williams?

He was not going to include any rookies with the exception of Frederick since he is proected to be a starter.

One of the things you all have to remember is that most college players finish their careers at age 22-23.

That means at the start of their 3rd season which is often when the light starts to come on they may already be 25 years old and thus ineligible for the list.

There are oddities like Tyron who came into the league at 20 but many guys red-shirted in college and they played through to their Senior seasons and are 23 years old by the draft.

For football, you should probably have the list go up to age 26 for a better reflection of young talent but 25 sounds catchier.

I was thinking the same thing. The arbitrary nature of that age cutoff means it is mostly a list of players with promise or flashes or who are already contributing from the 2011 and 2012 drafts (and one from 2013), who are still under 25. So no Lee, Carter, Murray, or Harris. None of this class except Frederick. A year ago, a list like this wouldn't have included Harris, who did nothing as a rookie but emerged last year, and should be on a list of young contributors if not young core.. He was just a hope a year ago, like Leary, Johnson, and most of the 2013 class are right now.

Exactly. The writer also decided that unless the player was lock to start (Frederick), rookies would also be excluded. (re:Hanna over Escobar), and there really isn't much of a timeframe to work with. It's basically a list of players who are either 24 or 25 with potential.

Silly article.
