Jordan was 37 in his first year with Washington and 35 in his last game as a Bull. Kobe is currently 33. The difference is the mileage. Jordan didnt begin his NBA career until he was 21, and due to an injury in his second year had essentially played four fewer seasons of NBA basketball at 33 than Kobe has. Kobe at 33 has played more games than Jordan had by the time he played his first game in Washington at 37, and has had more lingering injuries than Jordan did.

Let me ask you this, do you think any NBA GM would pick Kobe over Howard or Lebron right now, factoring in age and not past production?

I'm not arguing mileage. I'm simply saying 2011 Kobe is far better than a 2003 Jordan. If I were a GM I wouldn't pick Kobe over Dwight or LeBron if I were building a franchise, but if I'm just trying to win the title this year then I'd rather have Kobe.

I don't mean simply more talented. Lebron is bigger, stronger, more athletic, faster, etc. than Kobe right now. He can get to the rim at will, whereas Kobe really struggled at times to drive the basket last season. Kobe has lost some of the spring in his step and doesnt elevate off the drive like he used to. Once upon a time Kobe could take off from the box, go up and under and dunk the ball. These days he is settling for contested layups that rarely end well for him. Late in the year and in the playoffs he was settling almost exclusively for jumpers. In four games against Dallas he made three shots in the paint.

What happened to that great athleticism in the 2011 Finals or 2010 playoffs? It wasn't there because LeBron quit.

Like I said LeBron is definitely more athletic/talented, but he simply doesn't have near the work ethic or drive that Kobe has. I'd rather have a guy who while he is athletically inferior I know is gonna give it his all and compete all 48 minutes rather than a guy who is a great talent, but is simply a quitter.

Agreed, but Jordan was 40 by then. Give Kobe two/three more years to reach that number of games played and I'm willing to bet he'll be about on par with 2003 Jordan. He has played a TON of basketball games and that takes a toll.

If I were a GM I wouldn't pick Kobe over Dwight or LeBron if I were building a franchise, but if I'm just trying to win the title this year then I'd rather have Kobe.

If we're talking about a one year title it depends entirely on what team we're talking about. Howard isnt much help on a team with no perimeter scorers, for instance. I'd take Lebron on any team, though. Similar styles of play Lebron just does it better at this point. His mind will click eventually and he'll become a winner.

I don't believe he quit, I think the moment got to him. I think he felt like he was supposed to defer to Wade instead of doing it himself. That, and I think Dirk just had one of those moments we see every now and then in sports where a player simply will not be denied and trying to stop him is pointless. Wade did it in the 2006 Finals, too.

Like I said LeBron is definitely more athletic/talented, but he simply doesn't have near the work ethic or drive that Kobe has. I think he'll get there, he is too gifted for it to not eventually click with him.

Well it looks like we will be letting Chandler, Caron, and Barea all walk.

That means we have no shot at repeating this year.

So in 2013 we must be setting ourselves up to get Paul, Williams, or Howard right?

It sucks but it looks like we'll be wasting a valuable year with Dirk.

If the Lakers wind up making deals that bring Paul and Howard to LA this year in trades then the Mavericks could forget about getting eitehr cause they'll get locked up long term.

Man that's homerism. Dirk is that dude but he is not better than Kobe. Though he was better than him in the 2011 playoffs.

Right now Dirk is a much better player than Kobe. Kobe couldn't even mustar up a win against him. This isn't 2003.

It would still be an interesting match if we could bring back all of our players.

It's not like the Mavs havent taken down Superteams before.

The Mavs had crazy depth and LA won't have that depth if they make all of those trades.

But if all of Dallas's players walk they just wont be able to compete this year.

Well looks like everyone is getting 1 year offers.

They are talking about the Mavs somehow acquiring Billups and Turiaf from New York.

Looking at Brandon Wright also.

We'll have a lot of guys with expiring contracts on this roster.

Well looks like Chandler and Barea are gone. They need Roddy B. to step up and they need to make a trade for another center.

Saving a bunch of cap rooms for the 2013 offseason for players that are more then likely gone via trade this year makes no sense to me. Get Chandler and Butler back and you're at least contenders again this season without Chandler they're one and done in the playoffs

It doesn't make sense to me either but I would also like to see what Cuban and Donnie can put together with financial flexibility.

The Mavs had the deepest team in the NBA last year and they really didn't get that team with money.

Cuban actually thinks he has a shot at Howard, CP3, or Deron Williams when they opt-out. He doesn't. :laugh2:

Yeah he doesn't because 2 of those 3 will be Lakers.

So Butler signed with the Clippers for 3 yrs and 24 mil...wow.
Now Chandler is all but gone too.

My Mavs season tickets value (for this season anyway) is going down as we speak.

I thought all these teams wanted to be bailed out for making dumb moves.

Deron Williams is more than likely to end up in Dallas if he doesnt stay with the Nets. CP3 will end up in New York and Howard in LA more than likely.

Dirks got 2 maybe 3 good years still left in him, really wish they'd focus on getting the most out of those, but it looks like we're going right back to the 1 man team 5th or 6th seed one and done days now :bang2:

Those that I know in the Mavs organization say that they have a plan and to sit tight.

Right now, however, I feel just like you do. Maybe not one and done, but certainly not championship caliber without a move or two.

They offered Chandler 20 million/year...but I think it may have been just for one year.

Chandler just said on Ben and Skin he is going to the Knicks but he was so cool about it and so appreciative to the fans here.

He will always be a favorite of mine.

Yeah. Dirk was talking about how they were sad to lose him but he would always have a huge bond with Tyson after last year.
