Jerry needs to franchise Spencer. Not to keep, but to trade. There are more than a few 3-4 teams that would love to have him. If Ryan is the new DC in St. Louis I'm sure he would like to have Spencer. Houston, NY Jets, San Diego, and Green Bay will also all love to have him.

Spencer could get Dallas an early 2nd.
Worth a shot, we need all we can get right now.

My dream trade would be Spencer for Mangold. But thats probably a dream trade.

I want us to franchise him, too, but not to trade him.

Spencer played 4-3 end in college. Let's give him a year to show if he can excel at it in this scheme. If so, then offer him a long-term deal.

I thought the new CBA states that a player can only be franchised once...starting with last season's franchised players.

If this is true, then the Cowboys can't franchise Spencer

They can franchise him again but his salary jumps.

I'd be curious to see how he does as the strong side DE in Kiffin's scheme. I suppose if he is tagged it does have the potential to be a disaster, but in that case they could still trade him.

I have a feeling they will be able to make it work, but won't sign any free agents otherwise, and rely upon the draft.

If we do tag him and keep him for the year, and he has a good year at SDE, then the guy could write his own ticket in free agency next year. Someone who can thrive at both SDE in a 4-3 or strong side linebacker in a 3-4 would be very, very in demand.

So the million dollar question regarding Spencer is does he get paid as a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 LB? It probably is a couple million more if at DE...

Let him walk...... Not worth the franchise tag.... He had one good year......come on people

The cap penalty will be gone in 2014. I'm not familiar with what the cap situation will be like then apart from that, but there may be a better ability to sign him to a long term deal then. Although his salary will probably be lower than $10 mil this year if he's signed to a long term deal, so it would probably be more expedient with regard to the salary cap to sign him long term now than to franchise tag him, but that runs the risk of him being incompatible with the scheme.

I'm pretty sure it's based off of what he played in 2012, as I recall some controversy between Suggs and the Ravens as to what he lined up as more when they tagged him a few years ago.

I would franchise him to trade him also. However, I don't think we can get an early 2nd for him. I bet we get a 3rd for him.

I would like to see them use him to add a pick and let Hatcher play strong side end. We don't want 2 260lb DE's starting for us. We will get ran on way too much. Look at the Colts for the past few years.

Can afford the cap hit. We will get walloped if we franchise him and trade him

Did you even read the OP? You franchise Spencer and trade him a la Jared Allen.

He's expensive yes. But he is a beast also. Top 5 on this team IMO.

Depends.

There would be no signing bonus, and thus there would be no cap hit.

That being said, who is going to trade for him?

I think a lot of people. Pitts, GB, Houston, SFran, the list goes on and on. He's a beast.

We can't afford to franchise Spencer. We have to carry is franchise salary and be under the cap when march roles around.

That's why you trade him. Then Dallas doesnt have to pay a dime
