I'm genuinely optimistic about this coming season. I expect Jerry to resign all of our important free agents, extend Cooper, Zeke and Dak and go out and add some great additional pieces. The salary cap space allows for all of that to get done. This was the youngest team in the league on offense and on defense. They're going to be better and better.

Great things are ahead.
Only players over 30 are SLee and the long snapper..... future is bright and is right now

Pretty much what I would do except I would let go of LP if possible I know LS are not easy to find, and depending on the draft might keep R. Smith.
Long snappers aren't easy to find? Every team has one, and I can't remember seeing more than a couple bad long-snaps all season. That suggests to me that they're incredibly easy to find.

Cap Savings- remember this just a MENU of options, not suggestions

Restructures
TSmith............7.5m
ZMartin...........7.5m
TFred...............4m
TCrawford........4m

Cuts
SLee................7m
TCrawford........6m
AHurns.............5m
TWill.................2.25m
JHeath..............2m
JThomas...........2m
CJones.............800k

Extension

ACooper..............7m
Zeke...................2 years left
BJones................0m
Dak..................would add at least 6m to his 1.7m cap hit

TWill and Hurns were likely cuts regardless of how much they were making. The fact that it saves cap space to cut them is a bonus.

Crawford is not an elite player but 6M is not a huge number considering that he plays a lot of snaps and can play 3 positions.

Lee is a difficult decision for the team. The 7M salary is high for a part time player; however, his value as a mentor to Vander Esch and Jaylon is significant and difficult to measure. There is no guarantee that he would become a coach if cut.

Wilson was the starting SLB and is a free agent. Can 1 of the 3 of Jaylon, Vander Esch and Lee play SLB when they are in the base defense? Lee needs to play WLB if he plays which would mean moving Jaylon or Vander Esch to SLB in base. My opinion is that Jaylon is the best fit at SLB of the 3. Regardless, they play more snaps in Nickel than base and the starters in Nickel would be Vander Esch and Jaylon.

They are not going to cut Heath and are highly unlikely to cut Chris Jones.

If we let Irving walk(which we should) then they have to keep TCrawford.... add to MCollins, Woods and Ross..... don't subtract
Add a DT in the Draft early or go FA

If they want SLee's mind make him a Coach like they did with KMoore ..... backup LBs need to play STs ...but losing SLee may force them to bring back DWilson for 1-2m a year.....no biggie

Bye to AHurns, TWill, Beasley/TAustin......keep one slot guy ..... NBrown, CWilson and DSmith have upside

I don't think you can just "make SLee a coach" unless he feels he's done playing.
He knows he'll be hired as a coach when he's done.

Dak, ABrown and MCollins all got playing time bonuses of around 1m
LCollins hit a 2.5m escalator for 2019 with 85% of snaps in 2017-18

This leaves DAL at 46.7m under the cap of 190m

You can with an offer he can't refuse

There isn't a Salary Cap for Coaches

I guess it's a possibility, but...
Do you really see that happening? Jones backing up the Brinks truck for Sean Lee to get him to retire before he wants to become their LB coach for an exorbitant amount of money while Bloom has been generally lauded for his work this year also?

He's scheduled to make 7 mil this coming year unless cut and who knows how much another team might offer him for his services on the field... which is what it seems like he wants to do: play.
So let's say they offer him LB coach. For how much? Near what Garrett gets paid? You see that happening?

He is not getting 7m here to play 10 snaps a game and no STs

At best he gets a 2m base with incentives for snaps but that still makes him a progress stopper

If he is hell bent on starting then cut him loose and save the 7m..... MLBs are easy to find in FA

Why? You brought up the "just make SLee a coach", not someone else...
Why should I ask someone else?
I was responding to XWalker and you pressed me on it

I said IF they wanted SLee for his mind they could make him a coach.... I don't care if that happens .... I just don't want to waste a roster spot and 7m on him to keep as a mentor to 2 Pro Bowl level LBs

Okay. I can dig that.
Just the way you phrased it made it read like "just make him this..." without much consideration that it could actually be quite difficult to do so, if that's not his wish at the time.
I can consider the case closed, in my mind.

I think Lee knows that it will require a pay cut to keep playing here and if he desires to return I can see them making that happen.

Wow I thought the Colts were better. Two 8-8's followed by a 4-12 season. Maybe they should spend a little of that money.
That’s what happens when you draft well and have many of your starters and best players on rookie contracts

Only Lee can decide his future
If he really thinks he can play a few more years then I give him that opportunity somewhere else
If he wants one more and can accept a depth type role, maybe some SLB then I let him play out
My gut tells me that he decides he doesn’t have a few more years to play and either retires or plays out his last year and retires
He wants to play and I get that. Leaving what you’ve dreamed of your whole life is hard
But his body is failing him and it’s in his best interest for his future to see the end is here or near. And his career as a starter is over
