In a blog post on the Dallas Morning News site, there's an interesting article about how Bengals' QB Carson Palmer was praising his former mentor - and current Cowboys' backup QB - Jon Kitna. Palmer went on about how Kitna has a lot to teach starter Tony Romo and that Romo should listen to him. It was a nice, respectful comment by Palmer. Good for him.

But I thought the key line was right here:

Jon Kitna's arm strength is the most obvious reason he's a significant upgrade for the Cowboys at backup quarterback. Unlike Brad Johnson, Kitna can still put plenty of zip on his passes.

True, but the guy is missing the point. Let me rewrite that paragraph:

Jon Kitna's experience is the most obvious reason he's an upgrade for the Cowboys at starting quarterback. Unlike Tony Romo, Kitna can still complete plenty of passes to receivers that nobody has heard of.

And that's what it all comes down to. This year Tony Romo doesn't have Terrell Owens. He has Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin. Yeah, Miles Austin, he'll get the job done. How will Romo do with that group? My bet is not that well. How would Jon Kitna do? Well, he has experience with Roy Williams and he helped make a bunch of unknowns (guys like Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey) into legitimate fantasy stars. Kitna put up massive numbers with less talent than they have in Dallas. MIUCH less talent.

Which brings me to my real point -- I don't know if starting Kitna would win the Cowboys any more games, but it would sure be better for fantasy football players. Give Jon Kitna a solid running game, a good offensive line and Roy Williams, and he'll throw for 4000 yards. I'm sure of it. Give Tony Romo the same things, and he throws for 15-20% fewer yards.

This might seem mercenary to Cowboy fans, but I don't care. I want to see great fantasy production out of the Dallas passing offense and I think Jon Kitna is the one to deliver it. Do it Dallas, bench Romo and start Kitna. You won't regret it.

Well, I won't regret it.

And here I thought I'd seen the worst of the stupidity from this offseason. I was wrong.

At least wait until Tony throws his first interception to call for Kitna to take over.

In my eyes this is a make or break year for Romo. He will now have the tenure under center and should have the maturity as well.

My criteria for him is to show me...

1. Cool under fire. Do not toss it up like the Ravens game for a pick.

2. Realize when there is no Hail Mary that will bail out the play and don't take a sack. There is a tackle box, if you are outside of it, throw it away.

3. Be a leader. Hold people accountable on the field without it being frustration driven yelling.

4. Stay focused in December and in shape. Regardless of the view by the Romo-sexuals, there is a problem if you can't win in the late season. This is when playmakers make the people around them better. If Romo is the answer, then let's see it, kiddo.

Too early for the start Kitna chant. But the shiny is wearing off if Romo can't be more competitive and control his emotions and errors for me.

Danny White went 62-30 as a starter for the Cowboys. Romo has gone 27-12. As long as Romo wins 2 games for every one he loses he'll be the Cowboys starter for years to come. The grass isn't always greener.

David Buehler should go pay this gay a little visit.

(I meant guy, but that was too funny a slip to change it.)

TD, I agree with you on all points but #2. Romo is one of the best in the game at throwing on the run.

Didn't your father tell you it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think your a moron than to open it and remove all doubt?

I guess not.

You only change QB's if you think the backup is either a better player or has skills that the starter doesn't possess that you feel would be a better fit for the team. Kitna doesn't fill either of those requirements.

1) He certainly isn't the better player.

2) His skill set is similar to Romo. He takes chances with the ball and will have a higher turnover rate than most QB's. Romo is young enough that he may be able to improve in the turn over department. Kitna is an old man, what you see is what you get.

So why would you go to Kitna when he doesn't really add anything to the offense. He merely makes you weaker at that position.
