They thought team was so good they could trade down and draft ST players and backups. This could hurt for many years.

Are you saying that this team isn't good enough to draft "Red shirt" players? Really?

I disagree. You need solid backups and ST players to win in this league. You can't overcome bad ST and backups. Cowboys drafted a lot of raw players. They'll come through. Just not ready now. I don't know about you but I feel great seeing our special teams now compared to last year.

We are missing Hodge imo along with Williams. We need more speed in the lb dept...

Yeah, our special teams is good now compared to last year without the help of any of the draft picks except Beuhler. You don't draft for special teams.

They didn't draft ST players. When you lack premium picks, those players usually start out on ST/backups.

Anyhow, we hardly got a chance to look at any of them because most of them have been injured: Brewster/Hodge/JWilliams/BWilliams/Hamlin. The Cinci CBs just weren't very good and were cut. McGee is a developmental project at QB.

You can thank the RW trade for our lack of firepower. But hey, we were just one player away from a SB berth so it was worth it, wasn't it?

This. I want to see the players have a healthy shot before I judge this draft class one way or another.

This trading down crap does need to stop.

It wasn't so much that we traded down as we traded away our first and third rounders this year for RW. You're not going to have many impact guys right off the bat in a draft like that.

The apologists will defend Jerry to the very end but last year's draft was a bust. Hopefully, Jerry learns from it and makes adjustments to his "draft strategy". Either that or hires a Head Coach who has enough clout to draft his own players.

It worked so well in 1995 that we thought we'd try it again.

I'm no Jerry apologist - I actually dislike the job he has done as a GM a great deal. And about Jerry learning from his mistakes, that usually takes about a decade to happen so you're going to have to wait a long time for him to change his draft strategy when he has had as good a track record over the last 7 drafts as anyone out there.

I disagreed stongly with the RW trade. However, once that trade was made, you were never going to see much impact from the draft.

Anyhow, we need to re-orient our minds now. We are a mediocre team with a good two good high profile players in Romo and Ware. We need to stop thinking we are one player away from contender status. This team needs substantial improvements to compete with the Chargers of the league.

Hopefully this uncapped year will let us get rid of some contract deadweight and bid aggressively for a couple key spots if there are appropriate FAs. In particular, we really need help on OL ILB and safety.

I disagree.

We needed to greatly improve the special teams and we did just that. That's what kept the games we've lost relatively close (except for the 2nd G-Men game). We needed somebody down the line to take over for Brooking, and hopefuly we got it in Jason Williams...who can also play special teams. I look at Williams as a guy we planned to be a future starter. Same with Brewster. We needed a 3rd TE and we got an excellent one in John Phillips. You always need linebackers when you play a 3-4, and this is especially true with Ware out at least 2 weeks, so we got Brandon Williams and Victor Butler. By then we were in the latter rounds, which is where you usually seek out special teams players and athletes and that's what we did.

I actually think the draft, sans the Roy Williams trade, was one of the smarter drafts I've seen around in the league in quite some time. There's certain people on this team we need to replace IMO, one of which is the O-Coordinator, but this draft has been part of the solution, not the problem this year.
