Apparently he's on the 'boys radar. I think it's pretty clear we're going to take a DT in this draft. The question is where...

Maybe some of the UT fans here can give some insight. I've seen him a couple of times on tv and he seems to be an underachiever. If the Cowboys are looking at him I would think it would be as a DE not a NT given his size at 6'5" 300lbs. 2nd round I would think, #18 would be too early but what do I know?

They better not take this guy at the #18 spot. He may last until the third round, if so then I take a shot at him. He has to play NT though. We already have enough DE's that are better than him.

Wasn't this guy once viewed as a sure 1st rounder before last season? How the mighty fall...

He was projected as a first rounder had he come out last year. He has skills and is definitely athletically gifted, but he is somewhat of an underachiever. I'd take him in the 3rd round for sure because he does have good upside, but there's no way we take him in the first.

Scout is projecting him all the way to the 4th round, due more to attitude problems and taking plays off.

Not sure he'll fall that far, but u never know these days.

NFL Draft Countdown said:
Rodrique Wright
Height: 6-5 1/8 | Weight: 300 | 40-Time: 5.06

Official Bio

Strengths:
Big with a large frame that he could easily pack some additional pounds onto...An excellent natural athlete...Very quick and explosive with a burst...Strong and can hold his ground...Has great range and makes plays all over the field...Will penetrate and cause problems in the backfield...Has a lot of experience...Might be able to play defensive end in a 3-4 scheme...Still has quite a bit of potential.

Weaknesses:
An underachiever who doesn't always play up to his physical ability...Is not a hard worker...Technique is lacking...Will play too high at times...Allows blockers to lock on...Motor and stamina are very questionable...Has some durability concerns and dealt with a nagging angle injury for most of his junior season...Lacks desire.

Notes:
Cousin of NFL defensive lineman Cedric Woodard and his uncle Elmo was a first-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1971...Talented player who looked like a future elite pro prospect early in his career before leveling off...Has all the tools to be great but must be more consistent...Maybe a boom or bust prospect.

I don't think he's any better than a late 2nd rnd guy at best. When he plays, he can be a beast, (see this past Tx Tech / Okla games) but he has a rap for taking plays off. Dont know if it's justified or no. I also don't think he's big enough to be a NT, at least not yet.

Hey Chief, LOVE this!! :p:

Maybe another Chris Canty situation, except falling in the draft for different reasons (attitude instead of injury)?

never lived up to the hype, lazy, not a playmaker, great talent, no desire. nice 4th or 5th rnd project. knock him down a peg or two and he might wake up

Wasn't Willie Blade's rap for taking plays off also?

We don't need these types of players. They never pan out. You can't teach dedication. You either have it or you don't.

Rodrique Wright

:star: DEFENSIVE TACKLE:starspin

RODRIQUE WRIGHT MEASURABLES Height: 6-5
fraction_1-8.gif
Weight: 300 40-yard dash: 5.08 10-yard dash: 1.70 20-yard shuttle: 4.51 60-yard shuttle: Broad jump: 9-2 225-lb. bench: 31 3-cone drill: 7.84 Vertical jump: 32 Wonderlic: 20-yard dash: 2.91

Strengths: Has the complete physical package; is athletic with a huge frame. Shows an explosive first step and great mobility. Is strong enough to overpower blockers and quick enough to blow by them. Is fluid as a pass rusher, using a variety of moves to keep opponents off-balance. Plays with good hustle and uses great closing speed to scrape down the line and make plays from behind. Is a powerful tackler; rolls hips into every hit. Has the athleticism to break down and make tackles in open field. Is versatile enough to play in any scheme.

Weaknesses: Doesn't always play up to abilities. Uses poor technique and plays too upright when tired. Doesn't always use hands and wingspan well enough to shed blockers, allowing them to get inside and lock on. Must be more consistent. Must improve technique, add pass-rush moves and rely less on size and athleticism. Has some durability concerns because of a 2004 ankle injury.
Bottom line: Wright might be the most gifted athlete among the defensive tackles in his class, but many feel he never fulfilled his potential in college and have questioned his desire for the game. If he is impressive in individual workouts, he should be selected early in the second round.

NEWS
Despite being double-teamed all season, Texas defensive tackle Rodrique Wright remains a top-5 player at his position. But if Wright wants to be a first-round pick he must impress scouts in postseason testing. Wright's size, speed and mean streak are great examples of what NFL defensive coordinators want in a lineman. Wright could be a late first-round to early second-round pick, with the potential to start early in his rookie season. (War Room scouts' Draft Dish)

I believe the Cowboys are actually looking at him as a 3-4 DE, who can move inside to DT on obvious passing downs, when the Boys go to a 4-3...

I don't think he'd be worth a bleep as a NT, and I'm a Horns fan... but as I contemplate him as a 3-4 DE, I could see him being a good deal more successful at that role...
