Dallas' Yards Per Passing Attempt Way Up

Hard to argue that Romo's not having a fantastic season -- almost certainly his best from a overall QB efficiency perspective.

Am I the only one who laments that it took the Cowboys until Romo was 34 to surround him with an offense like this?

I don't think anyone will say Tony's not having a great season, but no one outside of Cowboys fandom or the Dallas locker room will consider him for MVP, either. Every media plaudit of Romo is accompanied by an obligatory quote about the team keeping him under 35 passes.

I'm right with you on Romo's career and the Cowboys' offensive philosophy. Real frickin' shame.

I was highly critical of Andrew Luck coming into this season because both his YPA was low and his completion percentage was under 60%. It actually made me wonder if he had it in him to become a 'great' QB. He has proven those concerns false this season.
Well, yes and no. His numbers are up this year and some of that is improvement on his part. But it's also the pass-happiest year in the pass-happiest era of the NFL. His completion percentage is still outside the top 10 and his YPA is only 8th in the league. The arrow is certainly pointing up for him, but he's behind the truly elite guys on a play-by-play basis and is making it up with volume this season.

A few of us where in fear of Romo becoming more of a dink and dunk QB as the years went on.
We noticed that his yards per passing attempt (YPA) had steadily dropped in recent years.

Well, maybe it's the new coordinator, and certainly the run game and strong oline help a ton,
but Romo is 2nd among all starting QBs in the entire league in YPA this season-- rolling along at a whopping 8.34 YPA.

That is a huge number.

It's highly unusual for a QB to be able to place near the top of the league in QB rating, completion %, and YPA. Usually the high YPA goes with a lower comp percentage.

Yet this year Romo is sitting at:
QB rating of 107.2
Comp. % of 68.8
YPA of 8.34

Great stuff!

This was about Callihan calling plays, not about Romo.

To be fair, is there any reasonable argument for Tony as MVP over Rodgers or Manning? If you're not plausibly the best at your own position, it's hard to argue that you're being snubbed in MVP discussion.

Got that vertical game back!

I'm not making an argument for Romo over anybody. I'm saying he won't be in the conversation because the Cowboys are a dominant running team.

What are the criteria for MVP, anyway? Is it for the player who's best at his position? To me that's Peyton Manning. If it actually means the player most valuable to his team, I'd have a hard time voting for anybody but Tom Brady or Andrew Luck.

We dinked and dunked because we couldn't protect the QB with a porous offensive line and nonexistent running game.

That's kind of my point. What does it mean to be "in the conversation" when you're clearly not the guy? By any definition of MVP, it ain't Tony, so why should there be a "conversation" that includes him?

Somebody said Romo was putting up MVP numbers. I said the Dallas running game would remove him from the conversation. That's all.

This is off topic, I think, but to me Luck is the guy carrying his team on his back.

True

So that's why being in the top 3-4 in the league in all of those categories tells the story even more than the actual numbers...to some degree..
Yep. The ranking always tells you more the the raw rating, and Romo is headed for 8 straight seasons ranked in the top 10.
