effort, if you are moderately funny and you keep grinding you can make it in the comedy game. Great thing about humor is how subjective it is, cook capitalized on a market and turned it into a career. You can take solace in knowing that niche people don't generally last, and cook isn't talented enough to transcend his role.

I freely admit I am envious of him, he found a niche and exploited it.

Thats the same feeling I get when watching Dane Cook.

I heard that Dane Cook really pushed himself on *******. He contacted as many people as he could promoting himself, which helped his popularity. I have seen a little of his stand up routine on HBO and caught him when he hosted SNL. I did not find him that amusing, which is why I have not seen any of his movies.
