He was talking about how much harder it is on the body to go from the West Coast to the East Coast than it is to go from the East Coast to the West Coast. He was talking about what a drag it is on the body.

In particular he mentioned when a West Coast team has to go to the East Coast and play an early game. He said that it's hard to get the body ready 3 hours earlier than you are used to.

He said that if you look at situations where West Coast teams have to go East for early games you will see that the West Coast teams have much harder times than if they get a later game.

Thought that was interesting information.

This was a big factor in Miami's ressurgence this year.

The 4 teams furthest away from the East Coast (Seattle, Oakland, San Diego and San Fran) all had to travel to Miami this year and play 1:00 games. No wonder Miami won all 4 games.

Schedule makers were incredibly favorable to them this year. Unless they hit some serious home runs in the upcoming draft or bring in some big name FA's they're looking at a big time fall next year IMO.

That is exactly the team he mentioned. He said they benefited from the schedule more than any other.

Wow, well good to see me and Moose were on the same wave length. I live in South Florida so I've been battling Miami fans all year. I'm glad a former NFL great backs up what I've been saying this whole time.

yep, one thing that helped the cowboys back in the 70's, 80's and 90's is that the nfl had like 2 teams scheduled to play in texas stadium in september when it was extremely hot. The other teams were gassed, having to use oxygen, and had lots of problems with dehydration.

So, the NFL caught up with the cowboys and rescheduled those games for the cowboys later in the afternoon or at night for cowboys games in september.

San Diego had the dreaded East coast schedule this year. Thye played games at Miami, Buffalo, Pitt, TB, and Pitt again in the playoffs. They also had to travel to NO. They only won one of those games.

I'm sure the other NFC West teams had similar schedules.

Your biological clock is set for how you rise. You can't dismiss the bodies time clock for the release of hormones. It does make a difference. And it takes 2-3 days to get over the disruption so the only way they could overcome it would be to leave on Wed/Thurs before a Sunday game. Not practical.

I figured flying out Friday night would help give the body sometime to adjust and you should be able to do walk through on the other team facilities just do it early evening to give your guys extra rest Saturday morning

I mean would that not help

makes a lot of sense. having lived on both coasts and traveling back and forth, it definitely is easier to adjust to west coast time. it's always easier to make yourself stay up an extra couple of hours and feel like you are sleeping in (for the west coast) rather than adjust to the east coast where you have to force yourself to go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier.

I have heard this before.

JMO but the league should mandate that all west coast teams that fly to the east coast should all get 4:00 (or later) kickoffs.

Here is something funny I just ran across this about what the Blazers are doing this year and it is in reference to what we been talking about

When the words came out of Nate McMillan's mouth, the Trail Blazers players had to laugh. In fact, even before the stoic coach had finished his sentence, he himself had broken character and chuckled a little. The scene was last month in Boston, at the end of a practice. McMillan had huddled the team and was delivering his usual day-before-a-game speech. Only this time, his speech had a catch. Instead of the typical "get-to-bed-early" advice, McMillan encouraged his players to stay up late. Really late. "He was like, 'You all go out, curfew is 2 a.m.,'" LaMarcus Aldridge said. "We all had to laugh." By then, the players understood McMillan's reasoning. He wanted the team to stay up late in order to keep their bodies, and sleep patterns, on Portland time. It was all part of the Blazers' new approach to how they travel, and more specifically, how they sleep when they travel. Flight departures were altered. Morning shootarounds canceled. Curfews relaxed. All so the Blazers players could get better sleep. At the seed of the changes was Dr. Charles Czeisler, a gray-haired professor who works at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and heads Harvard Medical School's Division of Sleep Medicine. Czeisler, who has also worked with NASA astronauts and the U.S. Olympic Committee, stresses the importance of getting enough sleep each night and keeping the body's internal clocks in sync by maintaining consistent sleep patterns. Inside the Blazers locker room, he has become known simply as "The Sleep Doctor."

It is an excerpt from the page

also on topic from another sport....during this years' f1's night race in singapore, many drivers (most from europe) kept their internal clock by staying up all night and sleeping during the day so that they wouldn't be sleepy during the night race.

the issue is really simple if you think about it from a physiologic standpoint. you can make yourself wake up early (you will be less efficient but you can do it) but you cant make yourself go to sleep early. you will go to sleep when you are used to going to sleep. so when these people try to go to sleep early saturday night for the 'ear;y' sunday game, they probably 'toss and turn' in bed and still go to sleep at their usual time.

this is in addition to the whole biological clock issue that jobberone brought up which takes a few days to work its way.

Well, the Cardinals played the Commanders (lost) and then stayed on the east cost for the whole week (practiced and everything) and got roasted by the Jets.
