I suppose other than you're wasting time on a guy whose quite likely to be absolutely useless to you in short order.

I don't see the real upside to that wasted time unless you're 100% convinced the guy is not going to mess up.

I wouldn't bother. The guy hasn't played in years there isn't enough upside to bother with.
